Now Is The Time For Action!

Almost two years ago my husband, Jeremy, called me on the phone from Afghanistan ecstatic.  No one calls from Afghanistan excited.  He was so excited because he had found a pool on the base he was at.  He had a grand idea that he would gather local men and teach them the sport he loved, water polo.  Jeremy asked me my thoughts, and I just laughed.  I laughed not because I found it funny, but because this was so typical of my husband.  He could and would find the most unlikely, impossible, strangest projects and make them happen.  In his eyes, he didn’t see why this couldn’t work.  He was passionate enough that it could fuel this fire and nothing could stop him.

Today he is stationed in Afghanistan as a Marine, and he is still pushing forward to realize the dream of a national water polo program in Afghanistan.  Jeremy has made some phenomenal contacts and is excited about the progress he has made.  We have made some leaps and bounds, but we continue to need your help!  I know the past two years have been tough financially; Jeremy and I are no strangers to the beast that is the economy.  Having said that, I know it is the toughest time to ask for donations; however, this program will never find its way here unless we can raise significant funds.  We are asking our fellow water polo players, supporters of this program, and anyone else that would like to stand behind us to aggressively step up and donate now.  While we have seen generous donation in regards to housing, food, and pool time, we still lack the funds to acquire transportation for the team, funding for the coaches, and so many other small incidentals.

Wherever you stand politically, religiously, or spiritually, this is something we as Americans can truly hang our hats on and be proud of.  America is known as a place where anyone’s dreams can come true no matter how impossible they seem.  If we leave any legacy in Afghanistan, it will be that we can share with them the wondrous ability to dream big dreams and revel in their future success!

As we end 2009, we ask that you seriously consider the impact that this project can have on each one of us.  Let’s unite as one nation and share a little bit of our “American magic” with our new Afghan friends.  Please also consider donating to this program as the tax year comes to a close.  If you know anyone interested in standing behind such a noble cause, we ask that you share this newsletter.  As always, we thank you for your support, whether in prayer, in thoughts, or in your letters of encouragement to us.  We hope each one of you has a safe and Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday, no matter where you are in the world!

How You Can Help

You can directly make a difference to help Afghanistan Water Polo by volunteering your time and expertise in Marketing, Sponsorship, Legal Services, Advertising and Fundraising, Photography, Event Management, Web and Graphic Design, or simply the "whatever it takes" attitude that is the hallmark of volunteerism.

Among the many types of volunteers we are looking for, we are in need of a Volunteer Coordinator to help support the volunteer staff we already have in place and future volunteers that want to help.  With the amount of individuals and groups that contact us to volunteer, our staff needs assistance from a volunteer to coordinate the efforts of these wonderful people.  This position will take approximately 2-3 hours of time per week and can be done from anywhere, even while you are in your pajamas at home!  Email access, telephone skills, and a big heart are all you need to get started.

Please call (760) 451-1783 or email us anytime at contactus@afghanistanolympicdream.com if you would like to volunteer!

Two Athletes on the Afghanistan National Water Polo Team have Died

Over the past year, I have received phone calls, emails, or questions directly from people that heard what we are doing and ask me questions or say to me:

"Is the Afghanistan National Water Polo Team is a joke?"

"Are you serious?"

"That is too funny. "

"Is this for real?"...
