New Year Message from TURN
TURN Community Services values choice, quality, and respect for people with disabilities and those who support them. These values form the cornerstone of our organization and inspire us to TURN dreams into reality.
As we begin a New Year, we wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to those who have given so much, in so many ways this past year: the TURN Board of Directors, the TURN employees, and, most importantly, the people who have chosen TURN’s services. We thank you! As always, TURN depends on the highly-valued support of the greater community: its financial partners, foundations, city and county governments, corporate entities, friends, family members, and the many private donors who have long supported this agency’s mission. We thank you!
Best wishes for a happy New Year,
Dan Adams, Board Chair and Phil Shumway, Exectuive Director
30 Years in Service to People with Disabilities
July, 2001 marked the beginning of a new era for Jan Parke, former President of Iron Parke Corporation, when she merged her Cedar City-based organization with TURN Community Services.
In 1979, Jan Parke began working with young adults with disabilities as a Special Olympics coach, and as a reading instructor through the Department of Continuing Education at Southern Utah University. Between 1982 and 1987, she helped develop and manage the first sheltered workshop in Irob County. In her spare time, she founded a non-profit organization to serve people with disabilities in 1984, Iron Parke Corporation.
As full time President of Iron Parke Corporation between 1987 and 2001, Jan Parke started the first apartment program in Cedar City, using a grant from the Utah State Division of Services for People with Disabilities. Under her leadership, Iron Parke became the first certified Alzheimer's Respite, Adult Day Care, and Intergenerational Care program provider in Southern Utah.
Over the course of her 18 years in business, Parke developed highly-respected service practices, and built strong programs throughout the Utah Counties of Iron, Washington, Beaver, Sevier, and Garfield.
Today, as Director of Housing and Development, Parke's responsibilities include grant writing, housing management, new facilities development, and overseeing the operations of TURN Secure Shredding (TSS), which she helped develop in 2008. Parke holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business and Education from Brigham Young University, and Special Education Endorsement from Southern Utah University.

TURN Programs Celebrate Holidays
TURN programs in Utah County had much to be thankful for when, just days before Thanksgiving, more than 40 United Way of Utah County volunteers came together to perform "Family Volunteer Day" service projects at East Bay day program and the Orem group home. To read the article: http://turncommunityservices.org/events/united-way-of-utah-county-family-volunteer-day.
On the night before Thanksgiving, more than 24 Wasatch Front area residential clients and their support staff gathered at the West Valley Country Inn and Suites for a 2-day retreat. The event included a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal served by the Cracker Barrel Restaurant.
Throughout December, TURN programs celebrated Christmas with parties from Weber to St. George. Despite a raging snow storm on December 8th, TURN held separate parties for day and residential programs at the Organ Loft in South Salt Lake. Northern area residential and hourly services clients attended a TURN party at the Ogden Fraternal Order of the Eagles on December 9th.
In Utah County, a Christmas dinner party was held on December 10th at the Orem Friendship Center. About 200 clients, TURN employees, family members, friends, and community supporters attended the event. Entertainment was provided by TURN clients from Provo area day programs who sang Christmas carols and performed in a Drum Circle to the song “Little Drummer Boy.”
The TURN Centers in Cedar City and St. George held separate parties on December 18th and 23rd, but the Southern Utah event of the season was a Christmas dinner and dance sponsored by the St. George Elks Lodge and the Washington County for all area service provider agencies. The December 15th event was attended by more than 225 people, including about 150 individuals with disabilities.
In Northern Utah, 24 TURN residential clients from Weber, Davis, Salt Lake, and Utah Counties came together on Christmas Eve for a 2-day holiday retreat at the Country Inn and Suites. For the past 20 years, TURN has held both Thanksgiving and Christmas retreats for people who would have otherwise spent the holidays alone.
