Voices of Transition presents innovative, inspirational – and concrete – solutions to the food security challenges we humans increasingly face. It explores agroforestry models in France, permaculture and transition town initiatives in England and the organic farming revolution in Cuba. By focusing on immediate profit and ignoring millennia of experience in agronomy, agro-industry is responsible for the unprecedented erosion of soils now occurring around the world. Add climate change and dwindling natural resources to the picture, and it would appear that even societies in the Global North are no longer safe from famines. Voices of Transition is a film which is optimistic but clear-sighted. It makes clear that these current and impending crises are, in fact, positive challenges!

CHAPTER I – REINTRODUCING LIFE INTO OUR FIELDS
In France, farmers and researchers demonstrate that agroforestry techniques, which imitate natural ecosystems, have enormous potential for our agriculture. It would appear to be just a matter of time before our monocultural fields are transformed (back) into abundant and biodiverse edible forests.

CHAPTER II – REINTRODUCING FIELDS INTO OUR CITIES
In England, the Transition Towns movement is developing at an astonishing pace. It illustrates that food production must not be solely in the hands of rural farmers (or faceless corporations), but that we can bring it into the very heart of cities. City-dwellers are no longer mere consumers, but instead play a vital part in the transformation of their communities towards local resilience.

CHAPTER III – LEARNING FROM AN EXISTING EXAMPLE OF “PEAK OIL”
In Cuba, the fall of the USSR in 1990 and the US embargo led to the country to experience “peak oil” long before it was expected. Shortages in resources led the Cubans to develop innovative solutions, with the result that they became vastly more self-sufficient in food production. In Cuba, food is now produced organically, in a decentralised, community-supporting way.

REVIEWS:
Excerpts from The Chic Ecologist Online Article, A Study in Sustainable Systems – Voices of Transition Documentary Film (read full article here)

Voices of Transition is an inspirational look at problems and solutions to the food security challenges we face as a society. A perspective into a movement from three different angles: agroforestry models in France combining orchards with diverse agricultural fields; permaculture and transition town community initiatives in England; and the abrupt, but necessary, organic farming revolution in Cuba.

I found it to be a great primer on how several individuals and communities around the world are addressing the concerns over agriculture, farming practices, and community. In the ever-increasing globalization of agriculture and takeover by multi-national giants, the grass-roots resistance to factory-farms is a ray of hope. The more eccentric, yet passionate and enlightened characters are entertaining and insightful, and balance well with the scientific and intellectual arguments.

Excerpts from Village Green Online Article, Voices of Transition (read full article here)

Having already enjoyed success in its native Germany the film has gone on to receive global applaud, even winning the main prize at Bratislava’s Ekotop Film Festival in 2012, which specialises in international sustainable development films.

More importantly the documentary’s legacy has led to many local sustainable projects being formed throughout Germany and beyond. Now those behind Voices Of Transition hope to spread the word further by releasing the DVD to English speakers.

Ironically, the film proves that innovation doesn’t always mean hurtling towards the future at a dizzying pace, taking time to learn from the past and nature itself seems to be the way forward in this example.

A happy bi-product of the movement is an increased reliance on neighbours, harnessing community power and strengthening bonds between different levels of society. Simple initiative such as organic veg box schemes and community allotments mean that sustainable food is affordable and accessible to all.
