Ushering in the New Year with Kurt Weill

Weill Featured in BBC Documentary and Concerts from Kentucky to Geneva

The start of a new year often invites both reflection and celebration. On Saturday, 3 January 2015, BBC Radio 4 looks back on Kurt Weill’s journey from German Jewish refugee to Broadway legend in a new documentary, “Speak Low, Speak Weill.” Created by producer Llinos Jones, the half-hour feature weaves together personal reflections by cabaret star Ute Lemper, musical examples, archival excerpts of Weill and Lotte Lenya, and insights by Weill authorities Kim H. Kowalke, Stephen Hinton, and James Holmes to illuminate Weill’s fascinating story and extraordinary contributions to the theater. The program airs at 3:30 pm GMT and will be available on BBC iPlayer for two weeks after broadcast.

To celebrate, Weill’s music will ring in the New Year on concert stages in the US, Germany, and Switzerland. For its New Year’s Eve festivities, the Lexington Philharmonic in Kentucky presents a “Moulin Rouge inspired evening” featuring Ute Lemper performing music by Weill, Gershwin, Edith Piaff and more. The lush Symphonic Nocturne from Lady in the Dark will be a highlight; Music Director Scott Terrell conducts.

On New Year’s Day, Oper Stuttgart embarks on a journey from Berlin to Broadway with an all-Weill program spanning his career, including selections from The Threepenny Opera and the Four Walt Whitman Songs. Principal Conductor Simon Hewitt leads the Staatsorchester Stuttgart with ensemble members of the Schauspielhaus Stuttgart. In Geneva, Finnish conductor Osmo Vänskä returns to the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande in a New Year’s concert on 13 January that features Grammy Award-winning soprano Dawn Upshaw singing selections by Weill, Duke, Bernstein, Gershwin, and Sondheim.

If you can’t make it to any of these concerts, treat yourself to the "Overture" from One Touch of Venus, recently released on JAY Records.

Happy New Year from
