SAVE A LIFE: SPAY OR NEUTER

October 2009

Hello Jason,

The last month has been very active for WAG. We participated in Meet Your Best Friend at the Zoo, where dozens of our animals were placed into new, forever homes. We also watched the struggles that one of our foster dogs had to face after being hit by a vehicle. Thankfully, Charlie has continued to fight back and is well on his way to a full recovery. We also hosted some fund-raisers which are a primary way that we receive donations so that we can do the work that we do.

Thanks for your continued support! Enjoy the newsletter!

CHARLIE'S SECOND CHANCE

Sometimes, pictures CAN tell a thousand words. This is Charlie when he came into our care in September:

And this is Charlie a few days ago (with his new buddy!):

For being only a few months old, Charlie already has quite a story. He came into our program as an 11-week-old Lab puppy who had just been struck by a vehicle in Brownstown Township. Sensing Charlie was in need of immediate medical attention, he was taken to Michigan Veterinary Specialists in Southfield, where he was hooked up to an IV and underwent constant X-rays as his lungs were severely bruised. After a few days of around-the-clock care, he was released to recover at one of our foster homes.

There, he was able to learn again what being a puppy is all about. You'd never believe this playful pup is the same one that had doctors worried a few weeks ago whether he'd pull through or not. He is very active and loves playing with toys, as well as other dogs and cats. He is
extremely affectionate, as well, and loves to cuddle.

As the animals in our care often do, Charlie made a few appearances at off-site adoption events, anxiously awaiting to find that special family to go home with. We are happy to report that on Saturday, the hunt ended. Our special guy was adopted to a very loving family. They were looking to adopt two dogs and decided to open their home to our LadyBug as well. One loving family + two WAG dogs = Years of happiness to come. While it was difficult for our volunteers who fostered Charlie to see him go, they wiped away happy tears, knowing that he has a bright future ahead of him.

Here's a short note we received from his new family:

"Charlie is adjusting very well – he loves to play fetch and you would never know he went through tough times. ... He loves his new family and we love having him! Adopting LadyBug at the same time made the transition better as they are best buddies! Thanks so much!!! Thanks for all that you do at WAG!"

Because of the 24/7 care that Charlie required when first taken in, WAG incurred a very large vet bill for his care. It totalled nearly $5,000. Since Charlie's story gained media attention, we have received donations to cover about 35 percent of the bill. We pride ourselves in being able to help the Charlies in the world because of the financial assistance we receive from our kind donors. We are extremely grateful to the following people for their financial assistance:

MEET YOUR BEST FRIEND AT THE ZOO

Our adoption event at the Detroit Zoo once again proved very successful. We placed nine dogs and 25 cats into new homes! The two-day adoption event, which ran Sept. 26-27, is coordinated through the Michigan Humane Society. WAG thanks them for the opportunity to take part in the wonderful event, as well as to our own hard-working volunteers who make the event possible for us.

While all of our animals are special, we were very excited to see Chico
find a new home. The always happy and sweet 4-year-old Chihuahua loves to prance around and get lots of attention. The social little guy weighed in at a whopping 5 pounds. Having recently been diagnosed with an enlarged heart and requiring medicine likely for his entire life, we thought it might be difficult for him to find a new home. We were happy to be proved wrong, however, and understand he is adjusting well in his new home. Congrats to Chico and all our four-legged friends who found new homes through the adoption event.

If you were unable to see our adoptable animals at the zoo, we have another off-site adoption event set for next month at the Jackson County Fairgrounds. WAG will be at the Paws & Claws Expo, set for 10 am to 3 pm Nov. 7. Please stop by, say hi and check out our dogs and cats looking for new homes.
WAG'S AWARD-WINNING ANIMALS

Julie Peterson and her hamster, Hammie, are enjoying their new lives together. Julie entered her furry fellow into a Hamster Derby on Oct. 3. He took second place and was anxiously awaiting to nibble away on some of his prizes.

HAVE A QUESTION? WE WANNA HEAR IT!

WAG is fortunate to work with many skilled professionals, including veterinarians and dog obedience experts. They've graciously donated their expertise to answer questions from our supporters. If you have a question for a vet or a question about dog obedience, email us. We'll answer a couple questions in each newsletter. (The advice given should not replace that provided by your personal veterinarian who has first-hand knowledge about your animal. Questions regarding the immediate well-being of your animal should be directed to the vet you use.)
LOOKING TO VOLUNTEER?

WAG is always looking for volunteers. They are the lifeline of our organization, which has NO paid employees. We can use volunteers who are able to give 20 hours a week or two hours a week. We can use volunteers willing to foster animals or those willing to make phone calls. There are countless volunteering opportunities available. Please email us to find out how your talents can best be used to help the animals in our care.
YOU MAY BE $500 RICHER AND NOT KNOW IT!

Did you purchase a raffle ticket from WAG earlier this year? Are you holding stub No. 2612? If so, you won and a $500 check is waiting for you! In an unusual turn of events, our first-place winner cannot be located. The name and phone number written on the ticket are difficult to read and there is no address listed. The name appears to be R. Holtz or R. Kloltz. We have tried calling every phone number we believe the number written can possibly be, but have been unable to locate the winner. If you're holding onto the winning stub, please email us immediately. You will need to provide the phone number you wrote on the ticket in order to verify it is yours.

Per state law, we have to attempt to locate the winner for 60 days following the drawing, which took place Sept. 18. Therefore, the winner has until Nov. 18 to claim the prize. Otherwise, we will draw another name from the original batch of stubs.

Deal me in!

Charity poker nights are quickly become a fad and WAG would like to get in on the fun. But we need your help. In order to host an event, we need volunteers. You don't have to know a thing about poker; just be friendly and willing to donate a few hours of your time. We're planning on hosting our first event early next year at Taylor Lanes. For more information or to sign up, please get in touch.
