FAMILY RECIPES NEEDED

Hello! For our eighth grade project we have decided to collect yummy (preferably local and organic) family recipes and combine them into a cookbook that will be made available to the SES community. The money collected will be put towards lowering the cost for the eighth grade marine biology trip to the Catalina islands near the end of the ’09-’10 school year.

Please include the title, ingredients, method/process, and any family story you’d like to share related to the recipe. If you have adapted the recipe from an existing cookbook, please include the original source. If you would like to include a picture of the completed dish, it would be well appreciated.

The deadline for sending in your family recipes is September 20, 2009, but the sooner the better! You can email your recipes to: sesfamilyfood@gmail.com

Thanks!--Emma Childs and Georgia Tucker

From Lake McTighe at Metro:

If you have not already done so, we invite you to take the Getting Around on Foot Survey  The Willamette Pedestrian Coalition is currently gathering input on challenging locations for pedestrians in our region.  This feedback will help us highlight needed pedestrian improvements in our upcoming Getting Around on Foot report.  The report will be shared widely with state and local decision makers as we advocate for improved conditions for walking in our region.

Please take 5 minutes right now to tell us about problems for pedestrian in your neighborhood.

The survey can be found at:  http://tinyurl.com/GettingAroundOnFoot

Get Student Walking and Biking to School

In 1969, 42 percent of students walked or biked to school, today less than 16 percent of students between the ages of 5 and 15 walk to school. At Safe Routes to School, we are working to increase the number of children walking and biking to school. By improving safety conditions and educating children on bicycle and pedestrian safety, we can create the best conditions for children to make healthier decisions.

We are currently looking for school volunteers to organize walking and biking activities at your school. Safe Routes provides trainings, incentives and other resources to help you get students walking and biking to school. We can help you organize a Walking School Bus, Bike Train, a walk and bike day or start a Stop + Walk program. For more information, check out our website at www.saferoutesportland.org or call Carolina at 503.823.1189.

Camp Fire News

Whew!  What a wonder filled couple of weeks.  Chris and Amber enjoyed participating in the International Walk + Bike last week and will be excited to join the crew again next month.  Chris's walking bus was full of maraca shaking and joy.  We look forward to making this an even bigger spectacle with your attendance!

Our first inservice of the year was a blast!  The theme was "Treasure Hunt."  We explored the Fernwood Elementary building by creating treasure maps, got out hands gooey with peanut butter playdough and filled our mental treasure boxes with information as varied as Mayan hieroglyphics to card tricks.

Also, our clubs are rocking and rolling--quite literally.  Chris's Rhythm and Movement Club went on a field trip to Anansi Beat.  Nii Ardey treated us to wonderful answers to our questions and fabulous songs.  Maia's Hip Hop Club is taking Camp Fire by storm.  Monday they prepared the walls for a mural students will design and paint while Ra Boogie guest instructed to offer students an energizing breakdancing lesson.  Cailtin and her Stop Motion Club is enjoying the world of imagination.  With their first trial film complete, they are now creating characters and stories to produce their visions.  We still have space in clubs and plenty more to participate in for any interested students.

Please contact Amber Peoples at 503-209-6989 or apeoples@portlandcampfire.org  to sign up for any clubs or for future inservices, late starts, and breaks.

The Harvest Faire needs a few middle school students to work as dining hall assistants that evening. The students would bus tables, replenish salad dressing, clean up small spills, etc... CAKEWALK CAKEWALK CAKEWALK CAKEWALK CAKEWALK
With the return of the Harvest Fair comes the return of the cakewalk.  What can we learn from the cakewalk curriculum?  According to historian Brook Baldwin, "Researchers have not yet pinpointed the origin of the cakewalk."  What our studies at SES have proven, however, is that dancing around to great music followed by eating amazing baked goods is about as good as life gets.  Further examination suggests that while anyone can play, it's only fun with lots and lots of cakes.  So:  Get your inner Julia or Julie in gear!  Plan on bringing cakes, pies, muffins, or cookies to the Harvest Fair - either your everyday run of the mill delicious variety or the super extraordinary bonus round type.  Beyond baking, we're also looking for some folks to help us on the Cake Walk Crew, especially for set-up and clean-up.  If you can join us - or if you have any questions - please contact Jennifer O'Connor (jenopdx@gmail.com) or Matt Karlsen (mattkarlsen@gmail.com.)

SES 2009 - 2010 Parent Education Program with Kathy KJ: Electronics and Your Children – Wednesday October 28, 9:00 to 10:30 AM, Room 215. Join other SES parents to discuss wise ways of parenting around all the electronic possibilities open to our children and teens today—cell phones, games, instant messaging, texting, social networking sites such as My Space, and so on.  (Cost - $5)
