The PDF version of the SES PTSA Family Directory is finally being sent! During the day on Sunday the 7th we will email the electronic version to every email address included in the directory. If you expect to receive this, but don't, please check your spam folder. If you still don't see it by Monday morning, please write to sesmessenger@comcast.net
Please keep this PDF on your computer. The best part of it is that it is fully searchable and so very easy to find contact information, even if you only have a partial name!
Also, don't forget to read and use the SES Sunflower Pages. These businesses have all helped support the kids at Sunnyside.

This is going to be a high-spirited event complete with food, photos, music, wine, beer, dancing and plenty of merriment (see, like prom but more fun)!

Join the fun..show your school spirit during spirit week
Monday PJ Day
Tuesday Twin or triplet day
Wednesday Crazy hair and make up day
Thursday Sports day
Friday Celebrity and Super Hero Day
School newspaper editor wanted three times a year
Looking for a parent to help publish a student newspaper printed thre times a year. Each class would create a small article of news. It would be printed at printshop and distributed before spring break. Please let Sarah know if you can help. Perhaps spend a day on a computer with small group of kids. Is there a good school paper computer program. The students have asked for many years for a school paper so hopefully we can make this wish come true.
Street theater in middle school
Middle school students worked with Caitlin for two hours on improvisation skills and how to persuade others through street theatre. This compliments a month long unit on persuassive writting and service learning related to deforestation. It was delightful to watch so many actors and actresses come out of the woodwork. There was so much creativity and laughter as well as thought about how we communicate. This was part of the school's goal to have theatre residencies for every classroom.
Kindergarten round up Tuesday at 6:00
Neighborhood families must bring two pieces of address verification and birth certificate. We will not take neighborhood names of those without these things. All families will receive a home visit in the fall. Please let all neighborhood families know how important it is to register at this time. Due to crowed conditions we are not able to accept 4 year olds.
Replication Meeting
Thursday, February 11th at 3:30 PM.
Everyone is welcome to the first introductory meeting where we set our timeline and define the task at hand. After this meeting, members of the working group will need to apply and commit. We need middle school babysitters for this event. The replication is scheduled for September of 2011. Sara Allen will represent the central office.
I know that there is discussion about how to keep SES strong at the same time. Many of the things we do will benefit both campuses so the two groups are somewhat inclusive.
Some long range topics might include:
location criteria
grade configuration
training and staffing
curriculum sharing
support and community
The Talent Show (date changed to March 5th) is a wonderful wonderful opportunity to enjoy the SES community in a relaxed family centered evening of music, dance and fun.
The Talent Show raises money for classroom theatre residencies that cost the school about $10 per child per year. I am hoping that an annual Talent Show can be a fun way to fund these wonderful opportunities for our students.
The 8th grade music cohort is working on this but they need your help.
This is what we need:
1. Parent coordinators for each team ( primary, intermediate, middle, alumni) This person recruits form their grade level. Talent can be students, families and parents. The coordinator would provide the coordinators/ office with the name and length of the acts.
The schedule is:
6 to 6:30 Primary
6:30 to 7 Intermediate
7 to 8 Middle school and alumni
2. We would like to sell dinner so that families can eat and see an act. Stay as long as is pleasant. Visit. I am hoping dinner could start at
5:00. Is anyone able to coordinate a dinner. It could be very simple.
3. The students will need help with a program as well.
What are the residencies you are supporting?
K The Mitten Play
1-2 Folk tale Puppet Play
3 Portland Musical
4 Oregon myths and legends plays
5 Shakespeare residency
6-8 Street theatre and Earth Day Musical
Please help. If you can not help with the Talent Show, we hope you will
consider making a donation to support your child's classroom theatre
residency. Its a busy, happy week of theatre at the school. Its a
wonderful way of story telling and winter tales. I believe that all
children benefit from learning through drama.
4-H Club Leaders for Each Grade Level
4-H was a way of life for thousands of rural children for decades of American Life. These clubs brought farm kids together to learn and socialize while supporting farm life. We at SES are fortunate to have the many resources of 4-H at our finger tips wiht 4-H just down the hall ready to support and help with the urban version of 4-H.
A great goal for SES is to have a 4-H Club for every grade level that meets weekly, bi-weekly or monthly. Its very easy. Just go and meet with Maureen and John and they will help you get on your way. Meetings are usually one to two hours long and include play and an activity. Activities can be around a theme or divide up and have each parent choose a different activity for a specific meeting. 4-H has many resources for each meeting.
Getting started? Decide you will be the main 4-H leader. Pick a day after school and invite others to join. Ask each parent to sign up to lead. You may wish to have a get to know you event. Come see Sarah to see the kits and possibilities. Get a friend to help you. The topic is not as important as is the special social commradory that will grow from 4-H Clubs at SES.
4-H is part of a greater vision for youth in Oregon and the country. Won't you help SES children be apart of this. Sign up today.
Sewing club for grades 4-8. Tuesday after school. Sign up in the office.
Thank you,
Sarah

School News:
Immunization Exclusion Day is Wed. Feb. 17th. Parents were notified by mail in November if their student was deficient with immunizations. The school nurse enters data when she receives it and enters it in your students school records and into the computer. Second notifications will be sent out soon. If you turned in immunization records after Jan. 12th, then you may receive a second notification. The nurse will begin entering data again this week. If your student has received a recent vaccination, please bring proof to the main office and it will be entered so the exclusion letter will be cancelled. Students who are deficient with their immunizations will be excluded from school on Feb. 17th and will not be allowed to return until the proper vaccinations are received.
Free vaccinations:
Students are being offered an opportunity to obtain the required vaccines at a free clinic. Students who have no insurance, are on Medicaid OHP, who have insurance that does not cover immunizations, or whose family cannot afford co-pays can go to a free immunization clinic on Tuesday, February 9th, between 3:00 and 7:30 pm at the Family Support Center (located next to Kelly School) at 9015 SE Rural St., Portland. Bring the Certificate of Immunization Status form or any other immunization records to the clinic.
- Please make sure the school has your current phone number(s). This is very important in case of illness or emergency. You can call the office at (503) 916-6226, come in and speak with Wende, or e-mail her at wjohnso2@pps.k12.or.us .
- Please remind your children to go home after school. Children should not hang around in the building or playground after school unless they have a class or are in the play. If your child has an activity (e.g., basketball) that meets later in the afternoon, they should go home before their activity or have adult supervision during the time they are waiting for the activity to begin. There is no SES staff supervision on the playground after 3:30 pm.
- Please remind your children that there is to be no skateboarding or bicycle riding on the school grounds before school and after school (until 3:30). If your child is riding a bike or skateboarding without a helmet, their bike or skateboard will be taken away from them. If this happens, a parent/guardian must pick up the bike or skateboard.
- If you are interested in your Middle School student attending a junior first aid class, please contact the office. If we have enough interest, we will arrange for a class with the Red Cross.
- We are looking for a chef to teach basic kitchen skills (especially cutting in a safe manner) to the students. If you can do this, please call Kristy (503-916-6226) or come and speak with her in the office.
Fundraising Opportunities:
Create washable labels for your students’ clothing, lunch gear and other items
"Because the labels are ordered on-line and shipped directly to you
this is a good fundraiser to share with people outside of Portland.
We'd appreciate it if you would copy this section of the Messenger and
forward to family and friends as an email."
Create custom washable labels for your student’s gear with this fundraiser from PTSA. SES parent Cindi Carrell is coordinating the sale and has used these labels in the past: “Both my sons have these labels on their school lunch containers and they have lasted over 3 years being washed daily in a regular dishwasher. Tags on their clothing have had the same durability.” Cindi prints her labels with her students’ last name and phone number. She also uses these labels on dishware for potlucks so she can get her plate back (masking tape falls off and Sharpie usually fades after one or two washings) and for marking water bottles. Through the end of February PTSA retains 20% of all sales through the web site: www.SES.lovablelabels.ca. You can also find a link on the SES PTSA web site under Fundraising. For more information, see the site or contact Cindi at ccarrell@gmail.com.
Created by a Canadian mom, this line of labels includes Regular and Slimline Stickers (great for lunch containers, water bottles and other smaller items), Shoe Labels, Iron-ons and Bag Tags. The labels are bright, simple and durable. The Regular and Slimline labels are microwave and dishwasher safe, the Iron-on labels stay put in the washer and dryer, the Shoe Labels have an extra strength adhesive to ensure they won't come off (great for rain boots) and the Bag Tags are made of a durable and flexible plastic. For older students, you can choose to leave off the icons.
Seed sale through Territorial Seeds is here...
Do sunny days have you thinking of your spring and summer
garden? Brighten your garden with spring-planted bulbs and save money by
growing your own vegetable starts and flowers. Our annual Territorial seed sale
starts this weekend and runs through February 19th. This year we’ve combined it
with the chance to order quality bulbs. Order seeds from Territorial Seeds via
our order form in the front hall or at the SES PTSA web site http://www.sesptsa.com/ptsa/fundraising/fundraising.php
Bulb orders can be done through the flyer sent home this
week. You can also print one from the attached pdf. One check can be written for both sales. Territorial Seed catalogs and
extra bulb flyers will be in the front entry hall. You can also view the
Territorial catalog on line at http://www.territorialseed.com. You may view the bulbs at http://www.dutchbulbs.com/images/articles/fundraisers/spring-2010/VB%20Fundraising%20Spring%202010%20Brochure.pdf.
SES PTSA retains 45% of the seed sale price and 50% of the
bulb sales so your orders help support our Sustainability Coordinators,
overnight scholarships and other PTSA programs like music. Orders can be put
into the envelope in the office or deposited into the PTSA safe in the workroom
next to the office. Seed orders will be placed February 20th. Seeds should arrive
within two weeks. Bulbs will ship separately and arrive within a few weeks.
Questions about bulbs can be directed to Claire Barnett, at barnett.claire@gmail.com and questions
about the seed sale can be directed to Cindi Carrell, 503-232-0880 or ccarrell@gmail.com.
Flyers for our annual plant sale will be distibuted Mid-March so stay tuned for
information closer to the date. All of this information will be available on the www.sesptsa.com website under Fundraising. Please pass this email on to friends, neighbors, and family.

MORE ABOUT THE 8TH GRADE MARINE BIOLOGY TRIP: In late May Sunnyside Environmental School 8th Graders will be attending the Catalina Environmental Leadership Program (CELP), an outstanding program that provides students with the opportunity to learn about the unique marine environment of the kelp forest. Experienced staff teach the students to become environmental stewards through exploration, group challenges and sustainability activities. Students are exposed to the plant and animal life first hand through snorkeling and kayaking and lab work. They make connections between their actions and the environment by learning about the history of the island. They participate in organic gardening and composting leading to an understanding of how the plants and animals are interconnected. http://www.celp.net/index2.html---

From Monica:
Brown, the bunny is looking for a permanent loving home. Many of you know Brown from the 1-2 classrooms. He has most recently been living in Monica's room, but the classroom is no longer able to contain him. Brown is a very calm sweet bunny. He is litter trained and loves to be around people. He is use to wandering around the classroom for hours so time outside his cage every day is vital. He does like to chew paper, books, and wires- naughty bunny, but he sure is cute! If you are interested let me know.
Thanks-
