WHERE: Exciting news! Doubletree Portland is generously hosting the event this year at their Lloyd Center Hotel, located at 1000 NE Multnomah Street.

WHY: Raise funds and awareness about hunger, poverty and food security. Proceeds go to the Oregon Food Bank and Oxfam.

HOW: Tickets will be available for purchase after school at the table across from the office, starting today - Wednesday the 6th
OR you can go directly to
Brown Paper Tickets

Also attending: special guest speaker, Metro Councilor Rex Burkholder. Related organizations will also be providing information on opportunities to serve and work towards helping end hunger and inequity in our community.

"Few experiences bring to life the inequalities in our world more powerfully than an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet event. Unique and memorable, the Oxfam America Hunger Banquet event allows organizers and participants alike to experience firsthand how our decisions affect others in the world....After an Oxfam America Hunger Banquet event, few participants leave with full stomachs, but all possess a greater understanding of the problems of hunger and poverty and will hopefully be motivated to do something about them." -Oxfam website

Grounds Update

As mentioned in previous issues of the Messenger, SES is engaged in ongoing discussion and negotiations with PPS, Portland Parks and the Sunnyside Neighborhood Association to deal with issues related to school versus community use of the school grounds (remember, PPS owns the school grounds, but PP&R manages most of the backyard, from Taylor St all the way to Yamhill).

Three parent leaders met with Jim Blackwood in Commissioner Nick Fish's office on Wednesday and learned that Commissioner Fish and superintendent Carole Smith have begun a new process to negotiate what all hope will be an acceptable agreement. They plan to meet at SES next week with Sarah and Amy. After that they plan to convene a meeting of a small group of invited players, including Commissioner Fish, PPS and PP&R representatives, Sarah, a few select SES parents, and a few select members of the neighborhood association.

We feel positive that this process is moving forward and being taken seriously at the highest level possible. If you have questions, you can contact Sarah in the office. In addition, a full set of notes from the parent meeting will be available in a binder in the office.

Measures 66&67

Lawn signs for Measures 66/67:  If you would like a lawn sign from the Yes on 66/67 campaign, please email hdnally@spiretech.com and we will either arrange to drop one off after school for you, or bring one to your house.

Please consider helping to canvass on behalf of Measures 66 and 67 before you go to the Hunger Banquet on Monday. You can make this a part of your Day of Service. This is an easy one in that it is only asking yes voters to turn in their ballots. On that note, you save the campaign lots of money by turning in your ballot now. That way, nobody will have to come know on your door!

  Fundraising/Community Opportunities:

"Because the labels are ordered on-line and shipped directly to you this is a good fundraiser to share with people outside of Portland. We'd appreciate it if you would copy this section of the Messenger and forward to family and friends as an email."

Create washable labels for your students’ clothing, lunch gear and other items

Create custom washable labels for your student’s gear with this fundraiser from PTSA. SES parent Cindi Carrell is coordinating the sale and has used these labels in the past: “Both my sons have these labels on their school lunch containers and they have lasted over 3 years being washed daily in a regular dishwasher. Tags on their clothing have had the same durability.” Cindi prints her labels with her students’ last name and phone number. She also uses these labels on dishware for potlucks so she can get her plate back (masking tape falls off and Sharpie usually fades after one or two washings) and for marking water bottles. Through the end of February PTSA retains 20% of all sales through the web site: www.SES.lovablelabels.ca. You can also find a link on the SES PTSA web site under Fundraising. For more information, see the site or contact Cindi at ccarrell@gmail.com.

Created by a Canadian mom, this line of labels includes Regular and Slimline Stickers (great for lunch containers, water bottles and other smaller items), Shoe Labels, Iron-ons and Bag Tags. The labels are bright, simple and durable. The Regular and Slimline labels are microwave and dishwasher safe, the Iron-on labels stay put in the washer and dryer, the Shoe Labels have an extra strength adhesive to ensure they won't come off (great for rain boots) and the Bag Tags are made of a durable and flexible plastic. For older students, you can choose to leave off the icons.

Seed sale through Territorial Seeds is coming soon

Dreaming of your summer garden? To help gardeners get an earlier jump on growing plant starts, PTSA has moved the Territorial Seed sale earlier. Look for order information and catalogs to be coming in the next week or two. Our plant and bulb sale will occur at its regular time in the spring.

Save your old cell phones, ink cartridges, iPods and laptops.  Sunnyside is working out the final details to an electronics recycling fundraiser.  More information will be available after the holidays.  Questions?  Email Howard at Hiton@speakeasy.net.
