Alysa Wulf is collecting dog food for Family Dogs New Life Shelter for her sixth-grade service project. This no-kill shelter rescues and re-homes any dog, and they are in need of dog food. Bags are in Indigo's classroom in the middle school for folks to place donate. Last day to donate is Tuesday, October 27th. Thanks for helping the dogs!

OPPORTUNITY TO ROOST FOR THE DAY

A steady stream of new middle school students have been jumping into The Roost as a place to chill after school, get homework done, and bring creative energy to special art, electronics and service projects.  There are no more open house days now that the Camp Fire staff is supervising full time after school every day 3:15 - 6pm.  The simplest and easiest way for a student to experience The Roost is to "Roost for the Day" by filling out the attached Camp Fire Supervision paperwork.  This paperwork must be given to Camp Fire staff at or before a first day visit.  Sponsorships are available for families in need of assistance with member fees which are $45 per month for each registered day of the week.  All registrations are handled by the Sunnyside Swap Shop Co-op.  More program information at www.sunnysideswapshop.org or by contacting Karen Hery at (503) 407-2667 sunnysideswapshop@gmail.com

Bring your water bottles to Harvest Faire! PTSA does not feel comfortable with the waste generated by selling individual water bottles. To this end, we are bringing 5 gallon dispensers of water and you can fill your own bottles. A donation of 25 cents would be welcome to offset that cost. Also, knowing that some people won't have their bottles, there will be some for sale near the sausage grill. Let's get better and better at this every year!

Hi,

I have always hoped to have a fire at harvest fair and it has been approved with a permit and the fire company is coming. So, would someone help with getting firewood ( can get at my house ) and help me tend the fire?

Thanks,

Sarah

5th Graders are selling pumpkins at Harvest Faire--now you don't have to rush to the pumpkin patch!

If you have any fingernail polish (especially primary colors) and/or face painting supplies, please bring them to the office by Wednesday for the Harvest Faire.

Service Opportunity for Middle Schoolers at the Harvest Faire: The Harvest Faire is coming! It's on Saturday, October 24th, from 4:00 to 7:00 at Sunnyside. The Harvest Faire needs a few middle school students to work as dining hall assistants that evening. The students would bus tables, replenish salad dressing, clean up small spills, etc... The shifts are from 4:30 - 5:45 and from 5:45 - 7:00. Anyone who is interested should email Jeff Ramsey at jramsey47@gmail.com so he can sign them up. There is also a sign-up sheet on the auditorium door for sign-ups. Thanks!

CAKEWALK CAKEWALK CAKEWALK CAKEWALK CAKEWALK
With the return of the Harvest Fair comes the return of the cakewalk.  What can we learn from the cakewalk curriculum?  According to historian Brook Baldwin, "Researchers have not yet pinpointed the origin of the cakewalk."  What our studies at SES have proven, however, is that dancing around to great music followed by eating amazing baked goods is about as good as life gets.  Further examination suggests that while anyone can play, it's only fun with lots and lots of cakes.  So:  Get your inner Julia or Julie in gear!  Plan on bringing cakes, pies, muffins, or cookies to the Harvest Fair - either your everyday run of the mill delicious variety or the super extraordinary bonus round type.  Beyond baking, we're also looking for some folks to help us on the Cake Walk Crew, especially for set-up and clean-up.  If you can join us - or if you have any questions - please contact Jennifer O'Connor (jenopdx@gmail.com) or Matt Karlsen (mattkarlsen@gmail.com.)

  A Note From Principal Sarah

Some of Sarah's ideas for getting garden hours:

--Harvest Education

--Make a display about a harvest tradition from around the world.
--Make a display about a certain food.  ( history of the potato )
--The displays should be neat and attractive and will be displayed in the hall.
--Harvest Fairy:  Create a costume that celebrates a harvest food - colorful dresses and a crown that illustrate a food or crop. Be ready to mingle and perhaps hand out samples of the food you celebrate.

Community:
--Host a UNICEF Table ( see Sarah )

--School based  ( sign up at school )
--The carnival
--The dinner
