LOST

Columbia turquoise blue and two tone gray winter coat, with hood; size 14 boys, with black  zip out lining and hoodie face cover. I thought that I'd put my son's name on the tag when we bought this in August, but perhaps not.  It's been missing now for  about one month. We are a low income family who can't afford to purchase a new one.  This one, which we actually did purchase this year, a first for us, was a gift from his grandparents. Alexander is in Karen Miller's 4th grade  class. You can return it directly to him, or contact me at the #'s below.

There is a reward for anyone who gives information leading to the successful return of this coat, no questions asked.

Bike First Camp Registration opens soon!!

For the past three year, Bike First in affiliation with Loose the Training Wheels have collaborated to offer Clinics for students with disabilities. The Bike First Camps help children with disabilities or special needs gain stability to master the skills needed to balance and steer a two-wheeled bicycle allowing them to play with their siblings and peers with new confidence. The clinics have helped students ranging from autism, mild cerebral palsy to Down syndrome ride a bike.

If you know a child at your school who could benefit from a bike clinic please have their parents register them at the Bike First website, http://bikefirst.googlepages.com/. Safer Routes to School offers full sponsorship for students who participate. For more information, please contact Carolina at 503.823.1189

Notes from Principal Sarah;

Photos needed for primary wing: I am looking for photos of every day life in Portland and around the world.  Cooking, transportation, bridges, buildings, occupations, traffic signs, work.  I am looking for diversity of lifestyle and families.  I am hoping for some nice enlarged prints that I can laminate for the block and housekeeping area.  Ones that inspire construction, play and conversation.  If this sounds fun to you I would appreciate it.  Middle schoolers could do this for school-based service.  8x10s would be perfect. Thanks, Sarah

Food, nutrition and cooking group: We hope to create a fun group of parents interested in these topics to meet once a month to facilitate these programs at the school.  Look for a January meet and eat date. Be sure to RSVP to Kristy in the office so we know to expect you.

Tree Recycling: Please support our middle school tree recyclers by bringing trees to the school the weekend after New Year's.  I believe alum parent , Sherry, will be available for warm drink and food sales.

January service-learning curriculum: In January, the classrooms at SES show their appreciation for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr and his work through a service-learning curriculum.  This is a special wintertime at SES and we hope that each family will find opportunities to be involved.  Middle school students will look for ways to educate about and prevent deforestation globally as part of a year-long focus on forests.

The Hunger Banquet will be held on MLK Legal Holiday with money going to local food banks and Oxfam International.

Seeking speakers for SES Nature Nights
We're recruiting speakers for family Nature Nights, planned for the second Tuesday of each month this winter and spring. We're looking for kid-friendly topics and activities. Can you give a talk about edible plants, stars, geology, or animals? Tell stories, make nature crafts, or lead a fun nature-related activity? Or do you know someone who can? Weekend nature walk leaders are needed too. Please call parent Elisabeth Neely to volunteer, 503-493-0137, or write your contact information on the sign up sheet in the office.

4-H Urban-Rural Exchange – NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS

The 4-H program is pleased to announce that we are now accepting application for the 2010 Urban-rural Exchange.  The program is open to SES 7th grade students first.  Unfilled slots for this program will then be opened up to 6th and 8th grade students.

We will be visiting three counties again this year:

Grant County (February 11 15)
Klamath County (March 18-23)
Wallowa County (April 9-13)

The cost is $100.00.  You can receive more information and registration materials by visiting the 4-H website at www.4hwildlifestewards.org.  Go to Oregon programs and then urban-rural exchange.  You can also check out online the OPB special on this award-winning program.  OPB featured the 4-H/Sunnside program on their Season opening of Oregon Field Guide.  For more information contact Maureen Hosty at Maureen.hosty@oregonstate.edu, stop by the 4-H office or call 503-916-6075.

4-H Urban-Rural Exchange Chaperones Needed

The 4-H program is now recruiting adult chaperones for the 4-H Urban-rural exchange.  Parents, teachers, and SES staff are eligible to apply.  This is a great opportunity to serve the SES community as well as see Oregon from a rural rancher/farm perspective.  Chaperones help drive the vans, conduct host family site visits where SES students are placed, and work with 4-H staff to assure a safe and healthy environment through support and enforcement of all rules.  4-H adult chaperones will be assigned to live with a rural host family (separate from youth host families).  There is no charge for 4-H chaperones.  Chaperones must be at least 21 years of age and agree to complete a 4-H leader application, reference check, criminal background release form and health form.  Chaperones must also complete the online state driving safety cours (30-minute online class).

For more information contact Maureen Hosty at Maureen.hosty@oregonstate.edu, stop by the 4-H office or call 503-916-6075.  Also visit our website at www.4hwildlifestewards.org.  Go to Oregon programs and then Urban-rural exchange

4-H Family Night and Potluck @ Sunnyside Auditorium January 11th from 6-8PM:  This January 4-H will begin hosting monthly family nights at Sunnyside.  Every event will include hands-on activities and resources for Sunnyside children and parents.  January’s topic will be Caring for Backyard Chickens and Educational Activities for Youth.  Information about chicken care has been developed by the state poultry specialist Jim Hermes and youth activities have been designed by 4-H faculty in Multnomah County.  We will also provide information about 2010 4-H camping opportunities including two Farm and Garden Day Camps here at Sunnyside and many more such as 4-H Super Science and 4-H Wildlife Stewards.  This is also a great time for families to learn how they can access resources from OSU Extension Service and learn about 4-H clubs and other great activities.  Call 503-916-6074 or email jonathan.mayer@oregonstate.edu to sign up.  There is no cost for this event and all ages are welcomed.

Fundraising/Community Opportunities:

Magazine Purchases/Renewals:

Sunnyside is part of a simple fundraiser: magazine subscriptions via QSP. The school retains 40% of the subscription costs and it can easily be done online for new subscriptions or renewals. Add this site to your browser so it is handy for renewals. Please forward to grandparents and others to help us expand our fundraiser. This is an easy fundraiser because you are doing something you already do - reading. Prices are very good (a recent parent found QSP prices $8 less for their subscription).

There are great birthday and holiday gift ideas in the children’s magazine section (I’ve highlighted the ones without advertising). These also make a great gift for teachers or our library.

There is a way for SES Parents to contribute thousands of dollars to SES without buying anything extra!!!
It's called E-SCRIP
This morning I registered my Safeway card and my Debit card with e-scrip in 5-10 min.  Without buying anything extra, I will be able to contribute potentially hundreds of dollars to SES.
Think about the amount of time you spent on the auction last year.  Even if you just did one thing for the auction, think about applying just a fraction of that time into registering your Safeway card, Debit card, and Credit Cards with e-scrip.  It is very simple and takes 5-10 min.  If you do it now, all of your holiday shopping will be earning money for SES.  In addition to Safeway, the most popular retailers in the Pacific Northwest who participate in the e-scrip program are ZUPAN'S, MACY'S, EDDIE BAUER, and SIERRA TRADING POST.  E-scrip has a nice website that explains the process for those who need to know exactly how it works.
DIRECTIONS AND CODES:
1.  Have your Safeway card, Debit card, and any credit cards with you at your computer.
2.  Log on to www.escrip.com and sign up.
3.  Type in SES' Group ID #:  8567150.  Then click on SES.
4.  Register your Safeway card by typing in the number below the bar code.
5.  Register your debit card by typing in the number.
6.  Register any credit cards if you use them.

That's it!!!  You can look around the website.  You can shop on the e-scrip online mall with familiar merchants if you wish.  The main point is that now you know you are contributing to SES with many of your ordinary, every day purchases.  Thank you for your contribution to Sunnyside Environmental School.

Recycle your Christmas Tree at SES and help raise money for middle school marine biology trips!

Saturday and Sunday, January 2-3 from 10am-4pm, on the blacktop behind school

$5 if you bring us your tree or $8 if we pick it up at your home.

Contact Barb at hoppbarbara@msn.com to schedule tree pick up.

We also need more volunteers to make this event a success.

We need a few more people with pick up trucks who can drive around and collect trees from people's houses.  We also need people to help unload and stack up trees at the school.  Students get service hours for helping out.

Contact Diana at VlahakisTesh@gmail.com if you can help out on Jan 2nd or 3rd.

We will have wood chips (chipped up Christmas trees) available both Saturday and Sunday afternoons.  Bring your own container.  These make great garden path covers and allow you to truly "reuse and recycle" your holiday tree all year long.  A small donation is appreciated.

Thank you!

Diana and Barb
