Dear Laundromat Project friends,

We hope that this finds you well. As we look forward to the season ahead, we must say our eyes are fixed on Haiti, just as your own may be. Artists and arts organizations have been organizing a collection of benefit auctions and other fundraisers in support of relief efforts. We will be hosting a series of public programs asking us all to examine the parallels between Haiti’s current crisis and the arrivals of Hurricane Katrina and Rita in the Gulf Coast region, so stay tuned.

You can also look forward to more weekend art workshops in front of The Laundry Room in Harlem starting in May; another season of public art projects around the city; and some secrets we’re keeping up our sleeves.

We are currently accepting proposals for our Create Change Public Artist Residency program. The complete application can be downloaded from our website, but we’ve included information below.

Until Soon.

Always,

The Laundromat Project

Create Change Call for Proposals

About Create Change

Create Change is a six month public art residency program developed to connect communities and artists of color in meaningful ways. As a 2010 Create Change artist you will place art-making in the context of everyday living by:

  • producing a site-specific, socially relevant installation at your local laundromat
  • engaging your fellow laundry patrons as participants in your creative process;
  • increasing your own visibility as an artist and a neighbor in the area you call home

The Create Change program invites you to use your creative practice as a vehicle to build relationships with and among your neighbors.

Create Change Public Artist Residents Receive:

  • A modest stipend
  • A materials budget to complete your Create Change project.
  • Professional development specific to creating public works
  • Opportunity to meet with other area artists to brainstorm ideas about your project once every other week
  • Projects will be featured on The Laundromat Project’s website
  • Community celebration featuring your work at the end of the residency cycle

Eligibility:

Create Change is open to artists of color living in the New York Metropolitan Area who are available to participate in residency activities between May and October 2010. Artists may work in any medium as long as they can adapt their creative practice to a site-specific project for their local laundromat. The program is not open to full-time students.

Deadline:
