The Fair Work Ombudsman has issued further warnings to key advisors: "You must explain the rules to your clients, make it clear when they are in danger of breaking them and not become involved in breaches of the law yourself."

The Fair Work Commission has recently made a number of very important changes to annual leave entitlements for Modern Award-covered employees. Employers should familiarise themselves with these changes because they may require existing workplace policies and procedures to be updated.

Spot checks of businesses in Central Queensland, around Rockhampton, Yeppoon, Gladstone, Biloela, Emerald and Blackwater, has found over 50% are not compliant with Australian employment laws.

> Almost $300,000 penalty for restaurant owner-operators and company (including over $100,000 in personal fines)
> Sydney man and his cleaning company penalised more than $11,000
> Restaurant operator penalised more than $5,000
> Fishing company penalised almost $50,000
> HR manager penalised more than $9,000 for accessorial liability
> Labour-hire operator penalised more than $100,000
