Donate a bag of candy, get in FREE!
The weather may feel wintery, but we'll still be here to welcome you Saturdays and Sundays throughout the rest of October, offering general admission from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day. Staff-guided "feeding tours" will be offered each day at 3 p.m. weather and staff levels permitting. As an added incentive to bundle up and brave the weather and enjoy the active big cats and other animals, we'll waive the cost of general admission (up to $7.00) for each bag of Halloween candy you donate to help support our annual Zoo'per Halloween celebration (see below)! Black Pine is also welcoming "wish list" donations to help us prepare for the winter season, which seems to be early this year. The following are some items we are especially in need of, and more commonly used suggestions are available for viewing online. Wish List items needed: single-serving "natural" applesauce, low-fat flavored yogurt single-servings, Glucerna protein shakes (for diabetics).
Zoo'per Halloween coming October 31!
Our family-friendly Zoo'/per Halloween celebration will be held Saturday, October 31 from 4:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the park. Animal overs of all ages will enjoy discovering several trick-or-treat stations as they explore the park and observe the llamas and deer, reptiles, bobcats, tigers, lions, and many other animal residents. We'll light a bonfire and have the fixings for s'mores and other snacks and drinks, and of course lots of jack-o-lanterns and other decor to light up the night! Admission for Zoo'per Halloween is discounted to $4.00 per person for ages three and up. (Sorry, no coupons will be accepted for this special event, though memberships will be honored). Come see what Zoo'per Halloween surprises are in store this year! Visit www.blackpineanimalpark.com/halloween or call (260) 636-7383 for more information.
Local company "covers" a need
During one of the nasty ice storms that passed through the Albion area last winter Black Pine's outdoor "gift tent" was destroyed. The staff came in one morning to find the aluminum frame had buckled and the heavy-duty commercial tent fabric was badly torn. A temporary solution was provided when Barb Leatherman, board member, loaned us another outdoor tent that has served us well throughout this summer season. We are now very excited to announce a significant donation from TFC Canopy, a division of Centurion Industries, is complete! TFC Canopy, located in Garrett, IN, installated a brand-new commercial canopy that will provide a permanent shelter for guest admissions and souvenirs at the park's entrance. The 20'x24' structure is the sort that is constructed at gas stations to provide shade and rain shelter. It stands 9' tall and is supported by two columns. The park hopes to one day have a building constructed to house additional office space, gift shop, and concessions. When that happens the canopy will be worked into the new design as a covered entrance and patio. We want to extend our thanks to Gary Henderson, sales manager, and all at TFC Canopy who made this wonderful donation possible! We know our patrons and supporters will enjoy this new addition to the park.
Beer tasting donors and sponsors make event a success
Despite the unpleasant weather leading up to our third annual Lions & Tigers & Beer, Black Pine! event, attendance approached last year's numbers and over $1,500 was raised to help fund winter care for the animals! Attendees enjoyed observing the animals as they tasted a variety of beers sampled by Five Star Distributors (Columbia City), Dekalb Distributors (Avilla), and World Class Beverage (Indianapolis). The distributors were recruited to support the event by local sponsors, House of Spirits (Kendallville), and The Dock (Columbia City). Once again this year Whiteshire-Hamroc (Albion) donated a whole hog and Stump's Hog Roasting (Cromwell) roasted and prepared the pulled pork. All Events Catering (Cromwell) donated use of buffet service equipment and Black Pine board member and long-time volunteer, Dianne Lengerich, prepared the rest of the food buffet. Entertainment was again provided by local classic rock band Six 'til Midnight. Their participation was led by former Albion residents Bo Smith (guitar and vocals), Steve Smolinske (lead guitar), and guest vocalist Paul Stephens. Board president Renee Runkle coordinated a new addition to this year's event, a silent auction. Many local individuals and companies donated items for the auction. We want to thank all who donated items, time, and labor, especially our Black Pine volunteer staff for their extraordinary commitment. We look forward to another "roaring" success in 2010! Thanks everyone!
W. Paul Wolf Match ongoing
We are still several thousands dollars short of meeting the "match" goal set forth by the W. Paul Wolf family to raise the funds needed to complete important capital improvements, including a new septic system and public restrooms. Donations made out to the "Noble County Community Foundation", with a note or memo indicating the donation is for "Black Pine's Non-Perm Fund" will be matched dollar for dollar, doubling your gift, up to $15,000! Send your check to: NCCF, 1599 Lincolnway South, Ligonier, IN 46767. Donate today and enjoy the improvements in 2010!
