LCM Students Making a Difference in New York City Braving a semi-monsoon for their first few days, 13 students from KU’s Lutheran Campus Ministry traveled to New York City for Alternative Spring Break.
Julie Bergene was the coordinator for the trip for the second year, setting up each morning’s service projects, ranging from soup kitchens to needle exchanges to after school programs (including one at Salam Arabic Lutheran Church). She feels that the trip allows everyone to grow through the experience of helping people they don’t know. Kim Self agreed: “Walking along the streets we saw business people and wealthy people, and then working in the kitchens, we saw people who had nothing, and yet some still had a smile on their face.” Although she had done mission work before, Maria Pirotte was especially touched while working at the needle exchange. “It was completely the picture of ‘when I was naked’ and ‘when I was hungry’ and ‘when I was outcast,’ she said. I felt like we did some good that day.”
Yet the trip was not all work! During the afternoon and evenings the students were able to explore the city and to almost feel like they lived there. Camaraderie was also the name of the game. “I think this was the greatest combination of personalities possible,” said Kim. “We all got along great and that made going through experiences together easier.” Even at night when everyone returned to their sleeping-bag-on-the-floor home away from home, Trinity Lower East Side Lutheran Church, the fun continued with raucous dance parties and Brad’s “ridiculous” snoring.
Returning home exhausted, each of the students was still able to see how they had participated in God’s work and how it had in turn blessed them during the week. Julie summed up this blessing as noting that they were sleeping on God’s floor and the sun would greet them (most) every morning. God’s light indeed was showered on these LCM students as they spread that light throughout NYC.

It's "Trivia Time"! Last month we introduced our "Trivia Time" question of the month. The trivia question was: What was the final score for the January 30th basketball game between KU & K-State?
LCM’s own Rachel Kibler-Melby was the first to respond (on the day before her wedding!) with the correct answer and won a $25 Visa gift card.
Pictured: Campus Pastor Shawn Norris presenting the gift card to newlyweds, Rachel and Carl Scharenberg. Congratulations you two!
Here's this month's "Trivia Time" question:
KU won the NCAA Championship in 2008, beating Memphis. Who did they beat in the semi-final and what was the score?
Be the first to answer and win a $25 gift card! Click on the link below, go to the lower left hand corner of the home page and email your answer.
