Dear Friends, Winter Greetings from the Students, Staff, Board, and Capital Campaign Members of Lutheran Campus Ministry at KU!

A Message from Shawn Longing for shelter, many are homeless. Longing for warmth, many are cold. Make us your building, sheltering others, walls made of living stone.
The words of this hymn from Evangelical Lutheran Worship have become our prayer here at Lutheran Campus Ministry. As we continue to see and learn about the devastation, hunger, and homelessness in Haiti, and around the world, we struggle to find ways to respond. Students, in particular have wrestled with the earthquake in Haiti. Several of them knew people their age who were killed in the earthquake. Often these were young adults who had gone to Haiti to help. For now, at KU, and across the country, we continue to pray, comfort, and raise money for the rebuilding, as we look forward to a time when we can do even more. As always, I am deeply touched by the generosity of students, who long to make a difference in the world, and who long to be a shelter for others.

What a Wonderful Gift! Recently we received a very welcome gift of $500.00 from Pathway Church at 75th & Nall, an Assembly of God Congregation. They meet in a Jewish Synagogue. The Pastor, Bob Jarred had been at Homer's Coffeehouse and overheard people talking about a fund-raiser to be held there in the evening and inquired about what was happening. Although he could not attend, he took the information to his Congregation and they agreed to give us this very generous gift.
You expect support from Lutheran Congregations and Organizations, but this shows us that others are also interested in establishing "A Home at the Heart of the Hill!

Thanks Again, Pathway Church

LCM's 6th Annual Trivia Night
The trash talking started a few days before between Sunday Best and The Church Ladies, while Religious Elements stood above the fray – which student team would defend Lutheran Campus Ministry’s possession of the Annual Trivia Night trophy?
The sixth annual event was held once again at First Lutheran in Mission on January 22 and raised money for the LCM student spring break service trip to New York City. Teams from area churches joined the excitement as participants tested their knowledge of trivia relating to the number eleven. For instance, do you know the answer to the following questions?
1. What was the eleventh team added to the Big Ten athletic conference? 2. What country has an eleven-sided one dollar coin? 3. What is the eleventh book of the Bible? 4. What gift was received on the eleventh day of Christmas?
At the end of regulation, Sunday Best was the winning student team, but they were tied with Trinity Lutheran Church. In overtime, Trinity answered the tie-breaker correctly and Sunday Best’s captain Rachel Kibler-Melby gamely relinquished the trophy. However, the students were the true winners, as over $1600 was raised from the night’s fun. Thanks to all who participated!
Please respond if you know the answer to any of the above trivia questions. Click on the link below and go to the lower left hand corner of the home page, then click on the email address. Send the number of the question you're responding to and the answer. The first people to answer correctly will be listed in our next newsletter - good luck and watch for more trivia questions!

"A Home at the Heart of the Hill" Want to have a lasting impact on the lives of KU students? You can by helping us reach our goal of a new, permanent location for Lutheran Campus Ministry at KU. We are here to help students grow, share and live their faith. We help insure that faith and service are central to student’s lives…their entire life.
If you would like to make a lasting difference in the lives of our young people, please consider this. If you have been blessed with the means, consider a Leadership Gift to our capital campaign. A Leadership Gift would be $10,000 or more. It may be either an outright gift or a Challenge Grant. A Challenge Grant would allow us to double the amount of the grant upon successfully meeting the challenge.
Our capital campaign is progressing on schedule. However, we are looking for one or more Leadership Gifts to build momentum and help us reach our goal more quickly. Time is of the essence. We would like to acquire a property located directly across from the bookstore. This property would be ideal, meeting all requirements for size, location, condition and attractiveness. It will shout to students “Come Join Us!”
Please consider a Leadership Gift if you can. With your prayers and support, we’ll be in our new home in 2010.

Blessing to you all! |
