Dear
Matt,
Maine Citizens for Clean Elections
is extra busy this holiday season. Why?
Because our Clean Election system is
under attack.
The National Organization for
Marriage, which is under investigation for violations that occurred in the
recent ballot initiative election, just expanded their lawsuit challenging
Maine's campaign finance disclosure laws.
Under Maine laws, groups like NOM
have to report independent expenditures that they make in races that have a Clean
Election candidate. Those reports often trigger matching funds which keep the
playing field level for candidates. NOM has asked the courts to overturn this
requirement so that the ads they run in 2010 -- to tell voters how candidates
voted on this year’s same-sex marriage bill -- are not subject to disclosure.
The effect of that would be to tip the playing field to moneyed interests and
keep Clean Election candidates from responding to attacks.
MCCE has already begun to build a legal
team to help defend the law. We believe we can win, but we need your help. Click here to
make a contribution to help us preserve Maine's successful Clean Election Act.
With groups like the National Organization
for Marriage attempting to weaken disclosure and other important elements of
these laws, it is essential that MCCE have the resources it need to push
back.
Today, Maine leads the nation when
it comes to campaign finance reform. Please donate now
to help us keep Maine's law strong.
Thank you for your support!
