Sick & Safe Leave Vote Passes 6-1

Dear Supporter:

Congratulations, Spokane Alliance! What a campaign! We put in countless hours on this important issue and it has paid off.  Around 11:30 p.m. Monday night the Spokane City Council Passed a Sick and Safe Leave Policy.  Durning the night of the vote we were able to pressure the city council to strengthen their draft ordinance from three days of earned sick and safe leave to two tiers; three days per employee in businesses with nine or fewer employees, and five days per employee in businesses with 10 or more.  This is a significant increase for thousands of people in our community.

IMG_9472The turnout and testimony was moving.  We had over 180 Alliance member and partners pack the council chambers, 40 of them provided testimonies with personal stories.  Everyone asked the council to amend the policy and strengthen the ordinance from three to five days.

Though we didn't get everything we asked for, that is the nature of negotiating.  We still came out with a win for our community, created more justice in our city, and addressed one aspect of income inequality.  Throughout this campaign we showed the power of coming together, the power of personal stories, the power of being consistent and having a clear focus. We identified an issue and developed a clear way to act on it that makes significant improvements in peoples lives.

We helped pass a very strong policy Monday night.  When we started this campaign we were told it would not be winnable, but we kept on organizing more people and organizations.  Now we can stand on the other side and see our intentional work and the lives it has changed.  You should be extremely proud!

Thank you so much for your work and committment to strengthen the common good!!!
