Young Israel Movement Calls on US to Condemn Goldstone Report

The National Council of Young Israel (NCYI) today called on the United States to immediately condemn the Goldstone Report, a nearly 600-page report prepared by former South African Judge Richard Goldstone about Israel's military operations in Gaza last winter.  The report alleges that Israel committed war crimes during the military conflict.

In a letter to President Barack Obama, NCYI President Shlomo Z. Mostofsky and NCYI Executive Vice President Rabbi Pesach Lerner expressed dismay over the United States' position on the report and its desire to postpone any action on the report by the United Nations Human Rights Council.

"The delay empowers those nations whose animosity towards the State of Israel is well-known and well-documented and seeks to marginalize Israel's legitimacy in the international community," wrote Mostofsky and Lerner.  "We believe that the United States should take definitive and decisive action to denounce the Goldstone Report and condemn its prejudicial and outrageous findings."

The National Council of Young Israel noted that the Goldstone report wrongly criticizes Israel for its actions during the Gaza conflict in December 2008 and January 2009.  In their letter, Mostofsky and Lerner wrote that the report contains a disproportionate amount of criticism of Israel as opposed to Hamas, a recognized terrorist organization that fired thousands of deadly rockets at innocent Israeli men, women, and children, and used civilians as human shields.

The report "fails to acknowledge Israel's inherent right to defend its citizenry from unprovoked acts of aggression and terrorism," wrote Mostofsky and Lerner.  "It inexplicably mislabels Israel's acts of self defense as human rights violations.  In essence, the report's findings condone terrorism.  We respectfully believe that this report warrants an immediate and clear condemnation by the United States."

Mostofsky and Lerner also noted that the Goldstone Report "fails to discuss the extensive efforts that Israel undertook to avoid civilian casualties; steps that far exceeded efforts to protect civilians that have been taken by other countries engaged in military operations."

Young Israel Dedicates Newest Branch Synagogue

Over four years ago the Jewish Residents of Gush Katif were removed from their homes. As part of the Disengagement from the area all Jewish communities were razed, bodies from the cemetery were removed to be reinterred, and the only vestige remaining were the synagogues that for halachic reasons could not be destroyed by Jewish hands. It did not take the Palestinians long to “rectify” this problem as they set about desecrating and burning these shuls with great zeal and celebration at the first available opportunity. One of these shuls was the Young Israel of Neve Dekalim.

On the second day of Chol HaMoed Sukkot (10.05.09) a contingent of Young Israel members and friends from Israel and visitors from the US, travelled down to Givat Hazan in the Lachish area in Southern Israel where 150 former Neve Dekalim families are beginning to rebuild their community and their lives. After four years in transit they are reestablishing their roots. The community will eventually house 500 families, many educational institutions, a commercial center and in its center will be the Young Israel of Neve Dekalim.

The celebrations were attended by over 2000 people who had come to show their solidarity and support. The large crowd was addressed by Minister of Housing & Construction Ariel Atias, Rabbi Yackov Ariel and many other dignitaries with musical accompaniment by Pirchei Dekalim.

This ceremony concluded with the Corner Stone laying of the new Young Israel shul. Amongst the many that poured cement were:  Mr. Ceec Harishburg (Chairman, International Movement of Young Israel – Israel region), Rabbi Jeffery Bienenfeld (Co-President, Council of Young Israel Rabbis in Israel), Rabbi Chaim Wasserman (Co-President, Council of Young Israel Rabbis in Israel), Mr. Daniel Meyer (Director of Branch Development, Young Israel in Israel) & Mr. Shlomo Julius (Young Israel representative in Neve/Bnei Dekalim).

The initial building process is planned to take two years at which time all are invited to the inauguration of the new Young Israel. Anyone visiting Israel wishing to visit the site and meet the “residents” should contact the Young Israel office in Israel, mush@youngisrael.org; 972+2+6254983.

Young Israel's Shalosh Regalim Campaign for Gush Katif

As part of the National Council of Young Israel’s Shalosh Regalim Campaign, more than 500 families from the former Gush Katif were given the food they desperately needed for Rosh Hashanah and Succot. Several truckloads of dry goods, fruits and vegetables, chicken, and fish were delivered to the families prior to Rosh Hashanah and before Succot. With many of these families still struggling to make ends meet four years after they were forced to abandon their homes and their communities, the food deliveries enabled them to prepare Yom Tov meals and truly enjoy the chagim.

While the Israeli government is finally beginning to recognize the disaster of the disengagement and the plight of the families from Gush Katif, your help and support is still needed. Please click here to donate. You can also visit www.youngisrael.org, click “Donate” and choose “Shalosh Regalim Campaign.”

Spare your Eyes Tears: Prenuptial Agreements for the Prevention of Get-Refusal

The Hebrew book "Min'ee Eiynayich Me'Dimah: Heskemei Kdam Nissuin Le'Meniyat Sieruv Get", authored by Rabbinical Court Advocate Rachel Levmore, published by Mosdot Ariel and the Council of Young Israel Rabbis in Israel, has been featured in The Jerusalem Post in an exciting article by Matthew Wagner.

See http://www.jpost.com/servlet/Satellite?cid=1249418650343&pagename=JPost%2FJPArticle%2FShowFull

In "Min'ee Eiynayich Me'Dimah: Heskemei Kdam Nissuin Le'Meniyat Sieruv Get" (Translated: Spare your Eyes Tears: Prenuptial Agreements for the Prevention of Get-Refusal) Levmore presents a full halakhic, historic and legal analysis of prenuptial agreements for the prevention of get-refusal, together with practical guidance as to the presentation of prenups to a marrying couple at the height of romance.

The book can be ordered from the Council of Young Israel Rabbis for NIS 120 in Israel or $40 for mailing in the US, at office@youngisraelrabbis.org.il

Min'ee Eiynayich Me'Dimah has been distributed by the CYIR to 1,000 individuals and institutions in Israel, including: rabbis, Rabbinical Court Judges, civil Family Court Judges, civil Supreme Court Judges, city rabbis, tzohar rabbis, hesder yeshivot and others, roshei yeshivot, women's midrashot, mechinot pre-army programs, law professors, talmud professors, university libraries, members of knesset, etc. In the short time it has been out, reports of its influence are coming in--"old school" rabbis are amazed at the scholarly book while marriage registrars are readily signing couples on the Agreement for Mutual Respect presented in detail in the book. Extremely positive reactions are beginning to come in from American rabbis who received copies. This is demonstrated by two positive book reviews authored by two rabbi-educators, both of whom call on the rabbinical establishment and on all marrying couples to sign prenuptial agreements.

Rabbi Dr. Ariel Picard, on the nrg news site called "on the rabbis officiating at marriages to require couples before their marriage to sign on agreements such as these." See http://192.118.0.136/online/1/ART1/911/597.html

Rabbi Chaim Navon, in his book review appearing on ynet--the widely-read news site in Israel, promotes the signing of prenuptial agreements calling it a "tikkun" of social injustice. See

The work of translating this book into English, for distribution in North America, Europe and Australia, has commenced. To help support this effective endeavor, kindly send your earmarked tax-deductible contribution to the Council of Young Israel Rabbis. Consider memorializing or honoring a loved one by sponsoring this sefer halakha in English, which will contibute to erasing the blight of the aguna problem from Jewish society.
