It has already been an amazing year. We completed 286 (5 more than last year) animals in the 5-day MASH Clinic, 81 animals in 5 1-day mini-clinics and our beloved Dra. Gaby has completed 18 animals in her clinic for PATA. That puts us at 365 already for 2010. This edition talks about the clinic and has a story about other things that happen at clinics besides sterilizations.

PATA held their 5th MASH Sterilization Clinic 11 - 15 March. As has often been the case in past years, this was an international effort. We had veterinarians participating from Manzanillo, Mexico City, Texas and Maryland. In addition there were volunteers from Mexico, Texas and one amazing volunteer, Laurie, who came from England to help out. This was her 4th PATA clinic, only missing the 2009 clinic. This year we also had the participation of
Fernando Garcia, a dog trainer from Colima, who not only assisted with the clinic but gave made a couple of presentations to owners.
Besides sterilization, we also administered over 300 doses of rabies vaccine provided by the City of Manzanillo, administered 5-in-1 vaccines to 173 dogs and assisted a couple of other emergency cases. One case where some volunteers saw a dog get hit by a car on their way to the clinic one morning and another case of a dog with a severly broken leg that had to be amputated.
Additionally we have been fortunate over the past 6 months to have received a significant quantity of material donations. Thank you to all and in particular Dr. Wilson and his crew for the foot locker FULL of material. These donations significantly reduced the amount of material we needed to purchase and have reduced our cost to sterilize an animal to near an amazing $12 each!
The final tally was 286 total animals and the detailed breakout was:
43 male cats
70 female cats
41 male dogs
132 female dogs
Lastly I would like to thank all of the volunteers for their dedication and hard-work during the clinic. It would be impossible to perform this great public health service for our community of Manzanillo without every one of you.

Dr. Susan Monger, International Director of The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association Field Services (HSVMA-FS), is returning this summer to Manzanillo. Some folks may remember her from 2008 when as the director of RAVS (now HSVMA-FS) she hosted a week teaching clinic before our 2008 5-day MASH Clinic. This time she is going to be working with the University of Colima Veterinary School in Tecoman for the third consecutive year. PATA volunteers will be assisting with this visit aiding continuing education and community outreach at the source.
In addition we will be "borrowing" a Mexico City veterinarian that will assist her for a few days after her work with the Tecoman school is complete to hold a couple of mini-clinics.
