Welcome to the July Edition of the PATA Patter
I don't know where the time goes, but amazingly it has been 3 months since our last Newsletter.
So far this year, we have sterilized 455 animals. This brings our lifetime total to 2,366 since 2006 when we held our first clinic. Of this year's total, 151 have been sterilized in one-day mini clinics. In this newsletter we have a little piece on them, plus an article on animal rescue in Manzanillo, another article on how to help with upcoming events along with a final report on the visit by Susan Monger, DVM.
Mini-Clinics
In May 2008 Pata Manzanillo held their first Mini-Clinic. These one-day "point of need" clinics

take the sterilization procedure into the neighborhoods where the need for population control is greatest. Since this first clinic, we have held 34 one-day "minis" in 23 different locations in and around Manzanillo. A total of 609 animals have been sterilized right at the owner's doorsteps. Many of these do not have access to transportation, so without the mobile mini-clinic their animals would not have access to the surgeries.

In order to reach out to
isolated areas, we start early in the morning. In just a few cars, trucks and vans jam-packed with equipment, we caravan to a pre-planned location, set-up the operating room/recovery room and start surgeries an hour later. We operate on between 15 and 20 animals and then comes clean-up and tear down.
These mobile mini-clinics are held in a wide variety of conditions, from cramped carports with dirt floors to commodious community buildings. The entire effort is only possible thanks to a small, dedicated team of volunteers.
If you are interested in helping with a mobile mini-clinic, please send an email to
stan@patamanzanillo.com and let us know that you'd like to volunteer. If you'd like to sponsor a mini-clinic, click below to donate.

Animal Rescue in Manzanillo
This is a difficult subject to write about as no one likes to see
animals suffering and everyone

wants to help. But the reality is that
there is NO large-scale shelter in Manzanillo. There are some attempts
to try and place animals that need homes through email lists and Social
Networking sites, but these are all informal avenues. So if one decides
to rescue an animal it becomes your responsibility to care for the
animal while the informal networks help to find a permanent home. The
veterinary offices around town are not proper drop off points for
homeless animals.
Here is an excerpt from an article on Animal Rescue in Manzanillo
Rambling along Via Madrid on a perfect winter evening, my reveries were shattered by a frantic tourist who rushed up to me gasping, "Oh, please, can you help me? I just saw a poor little dog get hit by a car. He's in pain. There doesn't seem to be an owner or anyone who cares. I don't live here; I don't know what to do. Can you tell me where's the closest vet? I want to help him!"

Fundraising Volunteers Needed
Besides working clinics, there are lots of other volunteer opportunities to help ensure the

continued operation of PATA free spay/neuter clinics. Some of these are below.
PATA 2011 Calendar
It is time to start spreading the word about our annual pet calendar pinup contest. As in previous years, each entrant may submit 3 - 5 HIGH RESOLUTION pics of your pet(s) along with a 100 word bio, owner(s) name(s) and where you live. The more compelling the story and photos, the better chance your pictures and story have of winning and being published in the 2011 calendar. Winners will receive a free calendar for having their pet included in the calendar. The cutoff date for entry submissions will be mid-September to allow enough time to complete the calendar's design. Calendars will be available in time for Christmas and all proceeds will help support free spay/neuter clinics.
PATA Dog Jog
This
event will be scheduled
around Thanksgiving. It's a fun 5km walk/run/race around the Santiago Peninsula and pets are invited to participate. We would love to have some help securing sponsors this year. Anyone who wants to knock on doors and/or has contacts with local restaurants, businesses or other services who would like to donate a package, meal, spa service, etc. as a door prize would be greatly appreciated. Also if you would like to help by holding a dog jog in your summer location, if you aren't in Manzanillo, let us know and we will send you all the info you need. It is fun and very easy to do.
PATA Poker Night and Silent AuctionThis event has the potential to be the biggest fundraiser of the year, but we
DESPERATELY need more help to make it sensational. We have talked about expanding it to a full-blown casino night, but need more volunteers to make that happen. Additionally we would like to have some new blood to help round-up auction items/prizes. Maybe some folks could obtain some prizes, like package vacation deals in destinations other than Manzanillo.

The Humane Society Returns to Manzanillo

Dr. Susan Monger, International Director of The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association Field Services (HSVMA-FS), just wrapped up a very successful teaching gig. Some of you may remember Dr. Monger from 2008 when her group hosted a week-long teaching clinic in conjunction with our 2008 5-day high-volume clinic.
This year Dr. Monger's team of 3 vets and 3 technicians worked with the University of Colima Veterinary School in Tecoman. This was the third consecutive year that HSVM-FS has worked with the university and Dr. Monger was extremely happy with their reception, so much so that she is excitedly planning to expand the relationship between the University and HSVMA-FS. She has graciously allowed us to use a quote from one of her status emails where she stated:
"This is truly one of the best receptions we have had at a Latin America University. The faculty have been with us all day each day, the students are really engaged and stay until the surgeries are completed and we have rounds, and the University truly has an infrastructure to work with. They filmed all day today in the surgery room and it was simulcast in a different classroom so more students could see and hear what was going on in surgery. I truly think this will develop into a great teaching center."
PATA Manzanillo assisted with logistics; helping with permits from the Mexican government and transporting all of their equipment moved. In addition we "borrowed" a Mexico City veterinarian to assist us and tacked on 3 days of mini-clinics after the University work.
