A letter from President Broadwater
Christmas Greetings to the ACBA Family; The Old Charleston District Jail is quiet with exams over and students having left for the break. There is still lots of work going on here getting the semester closed out and getting prepared for January. Your efforts this past semester have been noteworthy; academics, projects in the shops, the “Red Party,” recruiting new students, and the numerous other ways you all support the College every day have brought great credit to ACBA!
ACBA has forged some important partnerships in the past month. Celebrated architect Bobby McAlpine visited the school and spoke to students about the importance of craftsmanship to his projects and quality construction across the country. On the same day, the CEO of Milwaukee Tools, Joe Galli, visited and made a
commitment to provide new professional power
equipment for ACBA. Several students were here last week as we opened
the tools, marked them, and took pictures. We all owe Milwaukee Tools a
thank you for their wonderful gift in assisting us “educate artisans”
with these top-of-the-line tools.
The College lost a good friend and gentleman last week with the death of Chris Hammond; for those of you who may not have known him, he was on our Board and supported the school right up to the end of his battle with cancer.
My personal wishes are for each of you associated with ACBA to have a wonderful Christmas season and get prepared for 2011 as we take on new programs and challenges as we build something new for America.

A New Book on Jail to Benefit School

There are few buildings that have a more intriguing history than the Old City Jail. Surprisingly, very little has been written about it the 208 year old building. Until now. David Scott did a phenomenal job researching one of Charleston's most fascinating historic structures. This new book is a great resource for Civil War era history, details on the architectural evolution of the Jail, and stories from those who were imprisoned here.
This is the perfect gift for any history lover this holiday season! Proceeds from the book benefit the school directly. Get your copies online now at Bulldog Tours.
Award-winning architect Bobby McAlpine visits

Iron Smelting Demonstration February 4th
Bloomery smelting is the ancient technique of using a certain type of furnace to extract iron metal from it's natural ore and converting it to pure iron bar. ACBA's ironwork students will demonstrate free-hand forging techniques in collaboration with Stephen Mankowski and Shel Browder of Colonial Williamsburg on February 4th at the Old City Jail. They will make measuring tools and other important carpentry and joinery tools. These fascinating demonstrations will be accompanied by an interpretation of historical tool-making, including their evolution and design. Guests will come away with a deeper appreciation and understanding of the context of the smelting process and the origins of ironworking in America.
