Housing Update
2012-05-11 11.34.25
Energy conservation initiative begins: Haley House is embarking upon exterior upgrades to our Single Room Occupancy (SRO) buildings on Columbus Avenue. Improvements will include replacing all of the windows on the rear of the buildings and refurbishing the windows on the front of the buildings.  We will also be doing minor masonry repair on all facades.

Haley House offers permanent, affordable, and well-managed housing to individuals who have previously suffered the injustice of homelessness.  After an extensive capital needs assessment, we have identified ways in which our housing can become even more comforatble and environment-friendly. Stay tuned!

Volunteer Spotlight

988223_284854254991403_704428573_n-1 2Seek and Find:Whether preparing meals in the soup kitchen, pulling weeds in the McKinley garden, or helping with special events at , volunteers make an enormous contribution to Haley House's mission. Beyond dedicating hours of service, volunteers build relationships with everyone they encounter at Haley House, from soup kitchen guests to housing residents to cooking class students. A recent soup kitchen volunteer had this to say about her experience:

"In the soup kitchen, I've learned a little bit more about what it means to be loving by witnessing over and over again that to be loving requires resilience." Her reflection reminds one of Rumi's quote; "Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it."

Our most recent volunteer group, the youth group from Good Shepherd Parish helped to prepare an Elder Meal and participated in a reflection session about their experiences alongside Haley House's three most recent Showa Boston: Haruna Takeyama, Rino Sasaki, and Shiori Saito. Thank you to all our volunteers!
Community Tables

More than just a meal: Join us this summer for Community Tables, a weekly Saturday dinner at Haley House Bakery Café! The dinners feature healthy, affordable, and locally sourced food at a Pay-What-You-Want price. Doors open at 5:00pm and dinner is served every at 5:30pm. Community Tables is more than just a meal - it's a time to share stories, find common ground, and celebrate food and one another.

Community Tables is happy to announce new food partnerships for the summer.  Supporters now include The Buckle Farm, Food For Free, The Food Project, Iggy's Bread, and Red's Best Seafood.  We are still in need of corporate/group sponsers and volunteers for Community Tables, so please help if you are able.  And, of course, you are invited to come to the table and eat with us! Email Albert with any inquiries.
McKinley Garden

Have a green thumb? Join us in the garden for a community work day!Garden_79_of_174_ 2 There will be two community work days at the MicKinley Garden this month: Saturday, July 13 and Saturday, July, 20.  The work days will begin at 9:00 am and last until 1:00 pm.  To RSVP, please email Ruby. The garden is located on Montgomery Street, right next to Haley House's Soup Kitchen. Come help us maintain the garden as it used intensively this month for the McKinley Summer Program.

The garden also needs more plants, both vegetable and flowering. Please contact Ruby if you would like to donate seedlings or plants for the garden!
