|April Showers Bring... New Gardens!
An Update from Haley House's Garden Coordinator, Carmine Leighton
In partnership with Hawthorne Youth and Community Center in Roxbury,
community members and Haley House garden volunteers built 8 raised
garden beds on Saturday, April 26th.
Despite the rain and the city's cancellation of Boston Shines, we
started a new community garden. We hope to expand the urban farming space to grow food for Haley House and the surrounding Highland Park
To see more photos, check out our Facebook page!
We also worked on a documentary to debut with One Day on Earth, in which we celebrate our community and talk about why we are proud to live here. Stay tuned for a short film!
Happening every Saturday at 5:00 pm at Haley House Bakery Café
Have you heard about Community Tables? Community Tables is a 3-course, full-service, pay-what-you-can dinner that takes place every Saturday at Haley House Bakery Café. The doors open at 5:00 pm, and the first course is served promptly at 5:30 pm. There are no reservations or tickets required --the dinners are first-come, first-served.
The food served at Community Tables varies each week, but each meal is guaranteed to be delicious and healthy. Community Tables frequently offers vegan and child-friendly options as well. For example, a recent Community Tables dinner featured the following menu items:
Starter: Carrot Papaya Soup
Entre: Chicken Parmesan and Potato Wedges
Vegan entré: Seared Tofu with Greens and Potatoes
Dessert: Pumpkin Cake with Cream Cheese Frosting
But Community Tables is more than just a meal --it is a place to meet neighbors, celebrate food, and find common ground. We believe that everyone has a place at the table and a story to tell. So, please join us for Community Tables on Saturdays at 5:00 pm!
|Walk for Hunger
Haley House walks for Hunger Awareness
On Sunday, May 4th, a team representing Haley House joined with more than 40,000 walkers to raise awareness around hunger in the state of Massachusetts at Project Bread's annual Walk for Hunger. Project Bread is a dedicated supporter of Haley House's meals program, which includes the Haley House Soup Kitchen. We thank all of the Haley House volunteers, staff, and live-in community members who walked all or part of the 20-mile route or who were at the event to cheer on the walkers!
|The Soup Kitchen Needs New Chairs!
"People say, what is the sense of our small effort? They cannot see that we must lay one brick at a time, take one step at a time." -Dorothy Day
The Haley House Soup Kitchen has a great need for approximately 80 new chairs. Please help us provide this small comfort to our guests and consider making a donation to the Haley House Soup Kitchen Chair Fund. If you are interested in donating or have questions, please contact Haley House's development assistant, Claire Davis. Checks should be mailed to Haley House at 23 Dartmouth Street, Boston MA 02116.
If you have ever visited or volunteered in Haley House's Soup Kitchen, then you know that it is a special place. To many of our guests and volunteers alike, the Haley House Soup Kitchen is not just a soup kitchen, but a place where stories are told and barriers are broken down over a shared meal or a cup of coffee. Haley House's Soup Kitchen is remarkable in its ability to foster individual relationships between guests, volunteers, and staff. This unique quality is often spoken of during post-shift reflections, when everyone involved in making a meal sits down for a time of introspection and sharing.
The physical space of the Haley House Soup Kitchen is instumental in creating a relaxed and familiar atmosphere for guests, volunteers, and staff. New chairs that are both durable and comfortable would help to enhance the space and the quality of our guests' Haley House experience. Please consider helping us to purchase new chairs for the Haley House Soup Kitchen!
