Howler Monkies
October 3, 2018

Howler monkeys are the loudest land animals.
Their outrageously wild howls can be heard 3 miles away.
Like other species, these primates use their voices
to identify themselves, or to stake out their territory
and intimidate competitors.

Do you have howler monkeys in your environment?
These are the people who make the most noise,
command the most attention
and demand that others to see things their way.

There’s nothing wrong with this behavior.
Indeed, like our howler monkey ancestors,
they are just doing what comes naturally.
You’ve probably felt like howling at times yourself.

There are a lot of voices in our environment
competing for our attention.
When others are upset,
you may be thrown off course by their clamoring
and be seduced by strong emotions.
You may even feel panic arising in yourself in response,
but it’s usually not helpful to try and outshout the other person.

When someone is drowning in quicksand
you don’t jump in after them.
The way to save someone
is to tie a rope around a tree,
throw the line to the victim,
let them tie the rope under their shoulders
and help them pull themselves to safety.

Next time someone is screaming in rage or pain,
get quiet and listen to your Inner Voice.
I guarantee you’ll know how to be most helpful.
