The Best of Times, the Worst of Times

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.
This is the famous opening line
of Charles Dickens’ 1859 classic novel “A Tale of Two Cities.”
He was writing about the French revolution of the 1770s,
but every generation experiences its own day
as containing “the best and the worst.”
We are speaking of course of human nature,
which is a decidedly mixed bag of light and dark,
ignorant and enlightened,
cruel and kind.
In his great poem “Song of Myself,”
Walt Whitman declared “I contain multitudes.”
If you notice confusing contradictions inside yourself,
don’t despair.
Everyone has bad and good days, months, and years.
The world is a bed of roses,
except for when it’s a bed of nails.
Whether you feel hopeful or hopeless
about your life or the fate of the world,
remember that Heaven is Real –
it is the Bliss that you came from,
and the Bliss to which you will return.
Everything is going to turn out OK.
In the meantime,
Jesus said “Take up your cross,”
Buddha said “Pierce the veil of illusion,”
and Ammachi says
“Love the entire world like a Holy Mother.”
You can do this,
because among the multitudes within you
is your Enlightened Self, your True Nature.
Be patient with yourself and your fellows;
Because we’re all saints in the making.
Some are just closer than others.
