1st Annual Horses & At-Risk Youth Symposium
At the end of June, Unbridled Change's founder and lead therapist had the pleasure and honor of presenting at the first annual Horses and At-Risk Youth Symposium held in Ashville, NC at Horse Sense of the Carolina's.
Michelle Holling-Brooks and Cami Murnane enjoyed the two day symposium and the opportunity to highlight the work Unbridled Change has been doing with at-risk youth in our field. Participants came from across the country to collaborate and learn the different approaches and models that can be utilized to help this population. Their presentation was based on partnering equine assisted activities and therapies with character development curriculums designed for schools and after-school programs as a preventative measure.
"Our program 'Blazing the Trail of Character...One Hoofprint at a Time' allows students the ability to practice six character development concepts, in a manner that brings these words from an idea to concrete behaviors that they can practice and master." states Holling-Brooks.
Unbridled Change has piloted their program with Centra Health’s after-school program, an alternative program serving the greater Roanoke valley area with a 92% success rate and improvement in behaviors as documented in pre/post test surveys.

Students working on a service project they developed and implemented for the "citizenship" hoof-print
Murnane states that, "graduates of the program will have translated vague concepts into tangible skills that can provide healthy social skills for the future and help to create a successful well-rounded whole person."
