Hypophosphatasia, known by the abbreviation HPP, is a rare genetic disease that is often times devastating and can lead to life-threatening illness. In severe cases, stillbirth in children is not uncommon and long-term survival is rare.

"I had the opportunity to go to a couple of patient meetings and be able to interact with some of the people that had the disease," said Mortensen. "I got to see how they were dealing with the challenges and even to meet some of the children."

"Honestly, I never expected to be able to specifically interact with people that had been experiencing something I was working on," he said. "Most of my life is spent in a dark room playing with mice… it was an incredible and really meaningful experience."

Raymond’s research has been funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation as part of a larger Science and Technology Center — only 13 of these centers exist in the country. The Center, titled "Emergent Behaviors of Integrated Cellular Systems," or EBICS for short, includes about 30 faculty and 60 trainees, and is spread out over 11 institutions from Boston to San Francisco.

"Sharing science with others is the best part of my job. What we do at the Regenerative Bioscience Center is really cool and I want people to know that."

UGA Focus on Faculty

Engaging Young Minds

Welcome to the RBC!

Susan Fagan currently serve as professor of pharmacy, assistant dean for the Augusta campus of the College of Pharmacy and associate head of the department of clinical and administrative pharmacy. Fagan joined the RBC in March 2016

Dr. Steven Stice is leading new strategies to engage middle school and high school students in science. Recently Stice and PhD student Erin Kaiser, spoke to students from STEM Adventurers and the Dean Stuart Feldman Summer Science Institute.

A major focus of the El-Remessy lab is to understand the interplay between oxidative stress and inflammation and how they can adversely affect the vasculature culminating in major diabetic complications including vascular permeability, cell death and impaired angiogenic response.
