January Twenty Ten!

Hello to all the folk who have recently....... okay, it might have been months ago.....  signed up to the E-newsletter. I did have the best intentions to publish every month but 2009 got way too busy with ukuleles and the final shooting of the Song of the Kauri documentary, and if truth be told, football...... my New Year's resolution is to publish every month this year!

In this Issue:

  Song of the Kauri

Over the last three years I have been involved in the filming of  Song of the Kauri, a feature documentary film. It is all about the trees, instruments,  family, the land and the people of Northland who have been such a big part in my work. It has been a wonderful privilege and experience to be involved in the project but it will be even better when we can finally sit down and see it.

Many of you have expressed interest in the film and have been asking when it will come out. The editor, Annie Collins ( best known for her work on The Return of the King) has just completed the main editing. Post production work is still to be done but the release looks like it might be early this year. I have been told by the director that the family might be able to have a sneak preview very soon. As you can imagine, we are very excited!

I am also hoping to be able to have a special viewing of the Song of the Kauri documentary at the Newport Guitar festival. More details to follow on that....

  Hihi going fast!

Following on the success of the first release of my Hihi tenor ukulele models I have been busy building the last four of the 1st Limited Edition Series of instruments. And not to rest there I have also built 6 more custom Hihi. So that makes a grand total of 15 Hihi for 2009!

The 6 custom Hihi show a variety of back and side woods. There is figured totara and also puriri and three different grades of Ancient Kauri. One worth particular mention is the two-tone Hihi. This is an unusual set with the golden colour changing to a striking red.  The tops are all similar with the exception of the headstock overlay which generally will match the back and side wood. Some unique pieces of ancient kauri and also a new introduction with the use of puriri for one of them, which I am particularly fond of.

There are currently only two of my limited series still available (USD1500) and only two of the custom Hihi (USD3000) still available. Please contact me for more information if you are interested.

You can view one of the Limited Series on my website here and I have included pictures of the recent 6 custom Hihi below. They are not up on the website yet.

  Newport Guitar Festival

After 3 years away, Williams Guitars will be returning to the USA in April 2010 to exhibit at the Newport Guitar Festival in Miami Beach.  It is promising to be a great festival with plenty of guitars, music, and maybe even a film to see!

For many of you, this will be a rare chance to meet with me and discuss my instruments on a first hand, personal basis so I invite you to make the most of the opportunity. Plan a trip and come and introduce yourself.

Now is the perfect time to let me know what you would be interested in seeing/playing at the show. I can't promise anything but I will do my best. I look forward to meeting you in Miami!

All the best for the New Year!

Kind regards,

Laurie
