Learn about Rioja (pronounced Rio-ha), the perfect summer wine. Rioja's natural bounty and historical abundance of local pig and sheep farms have influenced a long and rich tradition of grilling in Rioja. Full of succulent red berries and spice, Riojas have silky texture and balanced acidity, making them perfectly paired with a range of grilled dishes, from meat and game to poultry and vegetables. A glass of Rioja will soften well-seasoned or spicy foods, but also couple harmoniously with the natural smokiness of BBQ, as well as grilling spices, such as cumin and coriander. Rioja is the one region in the world that only releases wines when they are ready to drink, so you can be sure that any bottle you purchase will be perfectly primed and ready to pair seamlessly with your favorite barbeque recipe.

Cosecha:
Juicy, full of fruit flavors and softly structured, these wines are slam dunks with everything from grilled turkey sausage with polenta, to Chinese spareribs, from babaghanoush to buffalo or even a ham and swiss panini.


Crianza:

These wines still retain a lot of fruit character and acidity but, because of their aging, start to take on some tannins. Because of the balance of acidity and softer tannins, these wines are perfect for a wide variety of dishes. We’re talking any combination of meat and tomato sauce; spaghetti and meatballs, veal parmigiana, osso bucco, burgers and ketchup. Then, there is meat: cheese-baked chicken breasts stuffed with mushrooms and goat cheese, carnitas burritos, hot roast beef and cheddar on rye, and all of your favorite grilled barbeque recipes.


Reserva:
This is where ‘structure’ really comes into play. Rioja Reservas, because of their age, develop firm tannins. Tannins are perfect for cutting through protein. Ever take a sip of a big red wine that dries out your gums and makes your tongue feel like sandpaper, but becomes a soft and delicious perfect pairing as soon as you take a bite of grilled steak? This is where Rioja Reserva really shines. With these foods, Rioja Reservas are a match made in heaven: Sirloin steak with demi-glace, grilled ribeye, cassoulet, grilled lamb chops, and burgers with foie gras, forget the ketchup.
