Friends,

As 2014 winds down, the Clean Coalition is proud to report on its work shaping the U.S. electricity system.

Over the past year, we've engaged with utilities and policymakers across the country to accelerate the transition towards renewable energy and a modern grid. In California, we are streamlining the deployment of distributed energy resources. Our Hunters Point Community Microgrid Project, being conducted in collaboration with Pacific Gas & Electric, is proving the techincal and economic viability of high penetrations of local renewables. Simultaneouly, we are guiding the implementation of Distribution Resource Plans at the California Public Utilities Commission, which will substantially shift the grid planning paradigm by putting greater focus on distributed energy resources. Our policy work on demand response and advanced inverters complements these grid planning efforts.

We continue to realize near-tearm market opportunity for local renewables. Our work during 2014 will result in clean local energy coming online in California, New York and many states in between.

2015 is shaping up to be an even bigger year. We are kicking off exciting engagements with a number of new utilities. California's Distribution Resource Plans and New York's Reforming the Energy Vision will further accelerate the transiton towards a more distributed, integrated grid. And our net zero initiative in Palo Alto will
highlight how to extend the benefits of local renewables and energy efficiency into the transportation sector.

From all of us at the Clean Coalition, we wish you happy holidays and are thankful for your continued support.

Sincerely,
Craig Lewis
Founder and Executive Director

Community Microgrid future coming to New York
In collaboration with PSEG Long Island and LIPA, we are staging a Community Microgrid project that will strengthen the most vulnerable portion of the Long Island grid by deploying significant additions of local renewables integrated with other DER, like energy storage and advanced inverters. Project basics are on page 19 of PSEG Long Island's Utility 2.0 Long Range Plan.

Once underway, the Long Island Community Microgrid Project will bolster our efforts helping New York cost-effectively transition towards DER to meet system needs. We are already sharing lessons from our Hunters Point Community Microgrid Project with utilities and through the Reforming the Energy Vision proceeding.

Net Zero Energy for Palo Alto
The Clean Coalition is spearheading the Downtown Palo Alto Net Zero Energy (DPANZE) Initiative, which aims to achieve net zero energy for at least 100 existing commericial building in downtown Palo Alto by yearend-2017. DPANZE is designed to be replicated across the rest of Palo Alto and far beyond. In addition to getting buildings to net zero energy through signfiicant energy efficiency gains and local renewables, DPANZE will heavily promote fuel switching to electrify natural gas applications and accelerate the transition to electric vehicles. The fuel switching efforts will maximize the contribution of renewables and energy efficiency throughout the built environment and into the transportation sector.

Realizing the benefits of advanced inverters
Advanced inverters improve power grid reliablity and efficiency. They also suppport easier and lower cost interconnection of distributed generation because of their ability to monitor and respond to grid conditions. The Clean Coalition is ensuring the adoption of smart policies to support the deployment of advanced inverters, and a California Public Utilities Commission ruling expected later this month will likely incorporate recommendations from our filings.
