An Invitation to Serve in a New Emmaus Experience

First there was the Walk to Emmaus.  Then there was Chrysalis.  Then there was Kairos.  Now the Upper Room has developed Face to Face in an attempt to reach a new group of pilgrims that are finding it increasingly difficult to commit to the intense weekend experience of a Walk.  This opportunity is for seniors, especially those in retirement centers or independent living facilities.  In addition to faith renewal, this program provides an excellent opportunity for socialization and through this experience and the Reunion Groups that will follow, these seniors can then help spread the Word to those within their congregations and to those who are in a group housing situation.

Successful Face to Face Encounters have been held in Arkansas, Georgia, California and Ohio.  This new adaptation seeks to invite men and women, ages 60 and older, to experience Jesus through a four-session journey, covering subjects such as discipleship, mission, grief, and end-of-life issues. The highly flexible schedule allows participants the freedom to engage in structured Bible study and prayer in a church setting or other community space. For many reasons, the Missouri East Emmaus Board of Directors has decided to offer this Face to Face ministry in our area.

Our first Encounter will be held at Church of the Shepherd in St. Charles MO.  It will take place in 4 six-hour sessions being held from 9:00 am to 3:30 pm on Thursday, November 2; Thursday, November 9; Thursday, November 16; and Saturday, November 18.  All of the familiar and powerful Emmaus experiences like Dying Moments, Agape Letters, and Candlelight are present, as are talks by lay and clergy.  The meditations and worship services that have meant so much to us are also still included.  The two major differences are in the scheduling, and that pilgrims can be a mix of men and women, allowing married couples to experience the Encounter together.  (Although the table communities will remain separated by gender.)  The cost of an Encounter will be substantially less than a weekend event, and pilgrims do not have to be sponsored by a member of the Emmaus community—although Emmaus community members will have a chance to serve as volunteer “sponsors” to fulfill the standard sponsorship duties for the pilgrims.

There are team service opportunities for both men and women in both the conference room and in support areas such as the Prayer Room and providing lots of Agape snacks and other items.  One of the best things about Face to Face is that if you have completed an Emmaus walk, you can serve.  Even if you have worked your way completely through the Walk to Emmaus positions, you can serve on a Face to Face team.

If you would like to serve and become the “hands and feet” of Christ for these new “senior” pilgrims, please contact our Board Coach, Nathan McKie (nmckiesr@live.com) or our Lay Director, Ken Cieslak (kjcieslak@gmail.com; or 314-412-0344).  If you feel you are not able to serve at this time, please think of others who would benefit from this service opportunity and spread the word to them.
