ClosedBridge-01 2UPDATE: Peterborough City Council Approves Capital Budget with $1,000,000 Allocated to Repair Pedestrian & Cyclist Bridge!

The pedestrian and cyclist bridge affixed to the CP Rail crossing over the Otonabee has been closed for reasons of safety and will likely require replacement. This bridge serves as the only convenient walking/cycling link from the southern portion of East City to Downtown and also connects residents to Beavermeade, Rogers Cove and the south end industrial and commercial areas.
Yesterday evening, Peterborough's City Council Approved the Capital Budget, which included $1,000,000 to replace or repair the bridge. A request for proposals for an Engineering Study will be sent out shortly, and the nature of the repairs will be determined by the results of this study. While this process could still mean the the bridge will remain closed for the foreseeable future, the Peterborough Bicycle Advisory Committee would like to thank City Council for prioritizing the repair of this important Pedestrian and Cyclist infrastructure link.

Ubar-01City Welding Now Manufacturing Inverted 'U' Bike Racks

Sue Sauve, Transportation Demand Management Planner for the City of Peterborough, started working with Leo Gabourie of City Welding several years ago to develop locally manufactured bike racks. Though City Welding has been constructing multi-bike ring racks for the last six years, until recently, the inverted U racks used in downtown Peterborough have been imported from Madison, Wisconsin. An Ontario-made source was sought, but one could not be found. Leo has put his talent to the task again and has just completed the first two Peterborough-made inverted U racks, with the help of some new machinery. Next year, when the City puts new bike racks in, we can buy local! Anyone interested in purchasing a bike rack can contact City Welding at 705.742.5974. The new inverted U racks cost $125.00 plus HST.
