Bell School Blink
Safety In & Around Bell School

I have many positive updates to share, but my mind has been very focused on the incident in Parkland, Florida. The lessons that our country should learn from Parkland have a direct impact on all of us. School buildings should be safe spaces for everyone, and it is very sad that we are now talking about how we should defend them against attack in addition to securing them. I would like all of our families to know that we take safety and security very seriously, and we are continuing to reflect on our current practices. We recently had a faculty meeting to review safety and security protocols, and we will continue to have safety drills for the remainder of the school year. We will be creating a new school improvement goal in this area in order to ensure that safety remains a top priority. Bell is a wonderful community with amazing people, and while we operate as one big family, we cannot allow comfort to settle us into complacency. So we will be reviewing our current practices and making adjustments now, and we will communicate our new school improvement goal to parents very soon. (Read more of Ms. Miller's Link message here.)

With that in mind, I would like to ask that everyone please help us keep our children safe during drop off and pick up by respecting the traffic rules that we have established so carefully at Bell. Please do not block crosswalks, do not turn onto Oakley as that is the bus lane, and please use the Kiss n Go area appropriately.

We will have new Kiss n Go signs on display within the coming days to remind everyone to pull all the way up and to not get out of cars to drop off students. The rules are in place for everyone's protection, and while the mornings can be stressful, nothing is more important that our children's safety.

Thank you,

Ms. Miller

School crossing 2This week, we are requesting volunteers from Rooms 101 and 225 to help with traffic safety. If you are able to volunteer any morning this week, please report to the security desk at 7:45 a.m. for a safety vest and minor instructions.

All Ages Show at Martyrs'

, featuring three bands sure to rock your world:

  • Chicago Drum Battery (led by Walter Anderson, a Bell 6th grade teacher)
Proceeds benefit the 8th grade Washington, D.C., fund. Tickets are $12 per person in advance available here or $15 at the door.

If you have any questions, please email the D.C. or Bust Committee at (See event poster here.)

Steam Lab Request

As Ms. Aldrin is planning and implementing the primary lessons for the second half of the year, several lessons have come up where building block would have been useful. It's not an immediate need - but a resource that I would like to have available. If your kids have outgrown their building blocks and you are looking to pass them off to a good home, Bell's Steam Lab is the place! Parents can drop them off at the front desk, or have their child deliver them (if not too heavy).
