No matter how big and powerful government gets, and the many services it provides, it can never take the place of volunteers.

Dear Friend,

As the Friends of Myles Standish State (FMSSF) Forest enters its fifth year, we want to thank all of you who have given your time and energy to the Forest. Together we've discovered that the Forest is more than just a great place to enjoy outdoor recreational activities.

The recent Resource Management Plan workshops have revealed that there are nineteen state-listed rare insect and plant species in at MSSF.  Sustaining the Forest as we know it will require careful use and constant monitoring, especially as the demand for recreational opportunities continues to increase.

We are proud of the group's accomplishments and look forward to another year of discovery, work and enjoyment in and for a wonderful natural treasure. We ask you to please continue your support of the Friends of MSSF. We have many ways for you to become even more involved—for the work is great and we can always use more hands!

Friends of Myles Standish State Forest
4th Annual Meeting
Wednesday, May 4, 2011
6:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Hilton Garden Inn
4 Home Depot Drive, Plymouth

The Annual Meeting of the Friends of Myles Standish State Forest (FMSSF) provides an excellent opportunity to renew our commitment and reinforce our mission, which is to preserve the pine barrens habitat while fostering sustainable recreational use within the Myles Standish State Forest (MSSF).

The MSSF is at the heart of the second largest unbroken tract of pitch-pine barrens remaining in the world and is home to rare species of plants and animals. The forest is subject to a number of stressors; including, invasive plants, development of surrounding areas and an ever increasing need for recreational opportunities. Climate change is now a significant factor adding to this list of stressors. How is climate projected to change for southeastern Massachusetts? What is the appropriate management response for the Forest? Eric Walberg, senior program leader in Manomet Center For Conservation Sciences’ Climate Change and Energy program, will discuss current and projected climate change impacts in New England, ecosystem vulnerabilities, and the challenge of adapting to climate change.

Please join your Friends for an evening that should prove as rewarding as it is enjoyable. You will enjoy a light supper, learn more about the Forest in the context of the region, and meet other like-minded folks who care about the environment and the community as much as you do.

Advance tickets are $15 each, when purchased before May 1. A limited number of tickets will
be available at the door for $20. Prepaid tickets will be held at the door. We would like to thank the managers of the Hilton Garden Inn who generously reduced the cost of the event in support of FMSSF. Please continue your support by renewing your membership today and by attending the Annual Meeting.

A great scene in the Forest captured by Laura Troll, FMSSF Hiking Group Co-Chair. Laura will use this picture and other great shots at a FMSSF board members presentation scheduled for The Pinehills, Plymouth, on April 14.

In addition to Laura, who will be speaking about hiking,
Glenn d'Entremont, Birding Chair, will help everyone learn the language of native birds; Melissa Guimont, Chair of Native Bird Support Group will describe what Friends are doing to encourage nesting birds; Irina Kadis, Director of the Native Plant Propagation Team, will use a fun quiz to share little discoveries about the world of plants; John Young, Co-Chair of the Vernal Pool Program promises to share his recent experiences searching for elusive vernal pools; and
FMSSF Pres. Sharl Heller will try to get everyone to join the FMSSF!

All of us hope to provide the good people of the Pinehills with an informative and entertaining presentation about the Myles Standish State Forest and the pine barrens of southeastern Massachusetts! Many thanks for inviting us!
