MRO Highlight: Drug Testing & the Importance of Medical Review Officers
Have you ever received a positive drug test report on one of your employees or applicants? If so, did you receive this result BEFORE or AFTER a Medical Review Officer reviewed and verified the result?
These questions are important! According to the Workplace Privacy, Data Management & Security Report, drug test results should not be reported to an employer until after an MRO has reviewed and verified the result. The report states that one of the purposes of MRO review is to ensure that the employer does not take action on a positive test result that may be explained by a legitimate medical reason.
What is a Medical Review Officer (MRO)? An MRO is a licensed physician responsible for receiving and reviewing laboratory results and evaluating any medical explanations for certain drug test results.
When should review be conducted? Medical Review should take place directly after the laboratory conducts the testing.
What is review by a Medical Review Officer important? Medical Review ensures accuracy of results and privacy of employee or applicant.
