This fall, with the help of Connecther & Strongheart’s Camps to Campus program, Benafsha Tasmim, the vibrant 23-year-old entered the master’s program at the School for International Training in Brattleboro, Vermont. The program supports Strongheart Fellows, which brings promising young people like Benafsha from conflict zones to the United States to pursue higher education opportunities.

It’s a dream come true for the self-assured young woman. After she earns her master’s degree, she hopes to return to Afghanistan and start a nonprofit organization that will help other Afghan women. In a country where 38 percent of school-age children, most of them girls, are not in school, training visionary new leaders like Benafsha is a smart move. Donations to Camps to Campus matched up to $2500!

Connecther Event Highlights

Out of conflict zones emerge heroes.  Out of war-ravaged Liberia, one such hero emerged: Ms. Leymah Gbowee, the Nobel Peace Prize winning activist created a coalition of Christian and Muslim women to fight against ruthless warlords in Liberia.  Leymah's book, Mighty Be Our Powers, chronicles the story of Leymah and her legion of women, who brought an end to Liberia's civil war and paved the way for the victory of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, Africa's first female president.

At our fall event featuring Nobel Peace Prize winner Leymah Gbowee, Connecther presented the Gbowee Peace Foundation with a $5800 grant to "Inspire and Empower Women and Girls."
