Clean Fuels Tip of the Month:
|
 |
Use Cruise Control - Selectively
Using cruise control can improve your gas mileage by helping you maintain a steady speed, but only if you are driving on mostly flat roads. If you are driving in hilly terrain, using cruise control typically causes your vehicle to speed up faster (to maintain the preset speed) than it would if you were operating the accelerator yourself. Before you push that cruise control button, think about the terrain ahead.
Interested in a Propane Vehicle? Try One Out Through our Vehicle Loan Program
Clean Fuels Ohio has partnered with Roush CleanTech to offer a new short-term propane vehicle loan program. Through this program, any government agency, company or utility with 10 or more vehicles in its fleet can contact Clean Fuels Ohio and request use of the propane vehicle for a up to a week or more. Refueling and training will be arranged by Roush and CFO with local area vendors. To qualify for the program please submit a short survey with information about your company and vehicle fleet.
The ROUSH Propane powered vehicle available through this program is a Ford E-250 cargo van. With a 5.4L V8, the propane E-250 has a fuel tank that was designed to fit snugly along the vehicle's frame rail where the gasoline tank used to be. It uses existing mounting points, so no new holes are drilled into the frame. The 25-gallon capacity tank gives you plenty of range between fill ups, and is made of 1/4" thick steel, over 40 times more puncture resistant than the tank equipped on factory gasoline powered vehicles. The ROUSH Propane powered Ford E-250 was developed specifically to maintain the same horsepower, torque, and towing capacity ratings you'd expect out of the gasoline powered 5.4L V8 engine.
Use of propane autogas offers fleets a clear way to reduce operating costs significantly while reducing vehicle emissions. Clean Fuels Ohio is pleased to partner with Roush CleanTech to offer this program to fleets throughout the region! To view the Propane Vehicle Loan Program Pre-Qualification Survey, click here.
2011 Clean Fuels Ohio Vehicle Buyer's Guide
We’re pleased to announce the availability of our 2011 Clean Fuels Ohio Vehicle Buyer’s Guide. The Guide is a great overview of the alternative fuels and advanced automotive technologies now available and the 2011 model year vehicles that can use them. Even if you aren’t in the market for a new car right now, the Guide is a good overview of cleaner, alternative fuel choices, including biofuels, natural gas and propane, and the range of electric and hybrid-electric vehicle options. Download a free PDF by visiting the Clean Fuels Ohio website, or stop by and pick up a hardcopy today. We will also be distributing the Guide at community events throughout the year. Many thanks to Honda, Roush CleanTech, Toyota, Coda Automotive, and the Ohio Soybean Council for making the 2011 Vehicle Buyer’s Guide possible.
Earth Day Outreach a Success!
Earth Day was celebrated on April 22 with a variety of community events held across the state. CFO was fortunate to have been able to participate in the Green Columbus Earth Day celebration at Franklin Park and the COSI Earth Day event on Saturday, April 23. We were also represented at the Easton Going Green event on Saturday, April 30. Our focus was to promote the latest Vehicle Buyer’s Guide, as well as answer any questions that individuals had about cleaner transportation fuel choices and technologies. Our RC car trivia track at COSI was also a hit! Many thanks to our volunteers for helping out!
Must Attend: 100 Best Fleets Conference
On Friday, May 13, the City of Columbus and the 100 Best Fleets in North America™ will present a conference titled, Implementing Best Business Practices: Solutions to the Ten Biggest Challenges Facing Fleet Managers in 2011. A survey by Government Fleet Magazine has identified the ten biggest challenges facing fleets this year and the Implementing Best Business Practices Conference will feature presentations from the top 100 Fleet managers in the Midwest about how to solve them!
The discussions will be led by two #1 Fleet Managers in North America: Sam Lamerato, Fleet Manager for the City of Troy, Michigan, who’s fleet was named the most efficiently run fleet in 2010 by Government Fleet magazine, and Kelly Reagan, Fleet Administrator for the City of Columbus. Columbus is one of the only fleets rated in the top 20 in both the Government Green fleets contest and the 100 Best Fleets in North America. Grant recipients are required to provide 50% cost share toward the project. Letters of interest must provide detail of your cost share commitment and the source of the cost share funds. Full details on this opportunity are available on our website.
City of Logan Launches CNG Street Sweeper On May 21, the City of Logan launched its new natural gas powered street sweeper at a press conference held with Hocking College Energy Institute and Clean Fuels Ohio. The City of Logan’s CNG street sweeper was purchased with the aid of Dept. of Energy grant funds secured by Clean Fuels Ohio. The City will be fueling the new vehicle at Hocking College Energy Institute in Logan with local CNG. The use of CNG fuel will provide both significant emissions and fuel savings benefits for the City. The street sweeper will utilize local CNG fuel available for $1.85 per gasoline gallon equivalent (GGE), saving more than $2.00 per GGE compared to current diesel fuel prices. Combined with the tremendous pollution reduction benefits of cleaning burning CNG, the City of Logan’s street sweeper project is a win for the environment and the City’s bottom line!
