Scholarship Deadline Approaching!
Our 2010 scholarship deadline is only few weeks away, and every day brings more applications in the mail!
Each year we receive more than 1,000 applications – and each year we look forward to reading every one of them (at least twice!) in our selection of one Mitchell Scholar from every public high school in Maine. Including the 2010 class of Mitchell Scholars this spring, nearly $8 milion will have been committed to help almost 1,800 Maine students pursue a college education.
If you know a deserving young person who is a senior in high school this year please encourage him/her to apply! Scholars are selected based on three criteria: academic potential, community service, and financial need. Applications can be downloaded from the Mitchell Institute website and are due April 1st.

MILE II a Success!
On February 27th, we held our fourth annual Mitchell Institute Leadership Experience II (MILE II) at Unum. The MILE II is a day-long conference for Mitchell Scholars and Alums that is designed to provide opportunities for personal and professional development. This year's theme was a big and most timely hit: How to Get a Job in a Tough Economy. More than 70 current Scholars and Alums participated in the day. They had opportunities to hear keynote speakers and panel presentations, and to participate in breakout discussions. Members of the Mitchell Institute Alumni Council were on hand to share their experiences. Representatives from Unum, the VIA Group, Wright Express and other companies and organizations also participated. Evaluations of the day were extremely positive, and great ideas were generated for next year's program.

Mitchell Scholar News
My name is Michael DuBois, and I was named a Mitchell Scholar in 2006. I graduated Salutatorian from Stearns High School of Millinocket in the spring of 2006 and have since attended the University of Southern Maine. I will graduate this spring from USM with a B.A. in pure mathematics and will pursue graduate work in mathematics in the fall.
During my time at the University, I've also worked for the University Police Department as an enforcement officer and parking associate (for three years) and for the Department of Residential Life and Resident Education as a resident assistant (for two years). As well as attending and working for the University, I've had the opportunity to take part in some very rewarding civic service projects, including volunteer work with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Southern Maine and the USM Office of Community Engagement; all of these things may not have been possible without the support of the Senator George J. Mitchell Scholarship Research Institute. In sum, it is because of your generosity that students across Maine have been able to attain academic goals and pursue dynamic careers. Thank you Mitchell Institute!

Mitchell Scholar Alumni News
I am currently the Technical Customer Support Manager for a scientific instrument manufacturer named Fluid Imaging Technologies in Yarmouth, Maine. Being a Mitchell Scholar played a large role in my ability to get this job right out of college. My CEO has a great respect for the ideals of the Institute and a wonderful grasp on what it takes to get and maintain this scholarship.
In many ways this is a dream job for me. It has allowed me to do instrumentation installations all over the world and interface with prominent scientists from a dizzying array of disciplines. I work in a broad spectrum of labs ranging from algal research to energetics manufacturing. The opportunities and networking that this job has opened up for me are more than I could ever have believed. Without the Mitchell Scholarship, I don't think I would have ever been able to get this job.

"20 in 10 Campaign"
The Mitchell Institute is preparing to launch a special fundraising effort, which we are calling the "20 in 10 Campaign." This campaign is aimed at raising 20 gifts of $10,000 each during 2010. The purpose of the campaign is to raise targeted dollars for the many forms of support and mentoring we provide to our Mitchell Scholars, and to ensure our operational foundation both this year and as we look to the future.
As well, other organizational fundraising priorities underway are dedicated to building the strength of the scholarship endowment so that very soon we will be able to increase the value of the scholarships we provide. If you are interested in helping the Mitchell Institute by being one of 20 very special $10,000 donors in 2010, or in providing a gift to the Mitchell Institute, please contact Bonnie Titcomb Lewis at btitcomb@mitchellinstitute.org or 207-773-7700.

A, B, C's of Maine
That's Aroostook, Bangor and Camden... where the Mitchell Institute is currently undertaking efforts to raise visibility, create networking opportunities for Scholars with area business and civic leaders, and, of course, raise money. Working with local community leaders in each region, Mitchell Institute staff and Scholars are creating exciting opportunities that will demonstrate the impact of the scholarship program in these important regions of the state. If you are from one of these regions and interested in learning more, please contact Colleen Quint at 207-773-7700 or by email at cquint@mitchellinstitute.org.
