Co-Artistic Director Janice Garrett teaches cooperative skills to students at the Stand Tall Primary School in Kampala.

Dear Friends,

This is Janice Garrett writing to you from Uganda where I am in the midst of Garrett + Moulton Productions’ first international educational outreach project. Since early October, I have been teaching movement and creative skills to 90 children at the Stand Tall School in Kampala—a free primary school for poor and orphaned children founded by my friend, Nicole Schouela. I have been joined here by British composer Christopher Benstead—an extremely gifted musician and facilitator who has worked with young people around the world.

Our time with these disadvantaged young people has been both sobering and inspiring. Each of these children faces enormous material and emotional obstacles. Despite this, they are extremely inquisitive and open to learning. I have been very moved by the grace and dignity with which they live their lives and by the creative spirit that is alive in each and every one of them.

My time in Uganda has strengthened my belief in the transformative power of the arts. As we foster creativity, we engender hope and find new ways of approaching the world and its problems.

My sincerest thanks to all of you who have encouraged and supported this very worthwhile project!

Warmly,

Janice
