This Weekend

Sunday, August 29th
Opening Sunday for the 2010-11 Church Year!

10am Service Celebration of Life
(If late arriving, please enter from the back at the second floor level.)
"Spiritual Relics,"
The Reverend Brian Covell and Ms. Kate Wilford, convening
Our 2010-’11 church “year” begins with an interactive intergenerational ceremony—bring mementos from places of spiritual meaning for you for display on our Rose Window mantelpiece.  It could be a vial of water from a lake visited this summer, flowers from a prairie path, or a picture of a beloved mentor you’d like to honor.  Our young people are especially invited to participate!  After the ceremony, we’ll repair to the backyard to spread the water we’ve collected on our bounteous Community Garden: a wonderful symbol of our commitment to UU environmental principles and to our neighborhood.

11am Forum (Courtesy to our guest speakers requires arrival by 11am.)
"The Books to Prisoners Project" (http://www.books2prisoners.org.)
Barbara Kessel, prison reform movement Books to Prisoners Project, speaking
Barbara Kessel retired from teaching at Truman College in Chicago in 2004, moved to Urbana , and became involved with Quakers Peace and Service Committee and with the newly forming Books to Prisoners (BtP) group.  Through BtP she became committed to working with the program in the county jails and to dealing directly with Illinois Department of Corrections about state prisons, concerning mail, prison libraries and reform of Tamms maximum security prison (our own Guantanamo on the Mississippi, with solitary confinement 24/7). Through Citizens for Peace and Justice, she grew interested in what goes on in our county courtrooms, the use of tasers, and the police (mis)use of force.  Through the National Religious Campaign Against Torture, of which Quakers are members, she has been instrumental in getting them to expand their mission from the international front to include torture in our jails and prisons in the U.S.

Other TUC Notices

The Garden Group will participate in the Great Perennial Divide event at Garfield Park Conservatory September 25th. This is a garden plant swap – donate perennial plants and receive donated plants for the Community Garden. A truck/van is needed and volunteers to place the new plants. Perennials from member gardens would make great donations. Contact Gary Zacny: gzacny@gmail.com, 773-267-8847.

Be aware of young kids (12-13) that may gather at the corner of Mason and Fulton.  On Monday evening, August 23rd, about 8pm, David Boulanger was pushed off his bike by a youth chasing him from the corner and struck a parked car. He was protected by his bike helmet but suffered cracked ribs and deep bruising. The neighbors quickly came to his aid – a note of thanks was delivered to them. This was a first-time (and hopefully only) event of this kind but caution should be exercised. David will fully recover and plans to be at Sunday service.

Ruth Dear is still at Rush Oak Park (ROP) Hospital on the rehab floor, 3d floor, room 307. Her phone number is 708-660-3071. She welcomes visitors and calls, and is with it and glad to keep up with the world. It seems best to call or visit between 2 pm and 8 pm.
Call or email Sue, Sandy, or Leah for info, or to let them know how she seemed during your visit.

Chairlift is fully functioning. Try it yourself. It needs exercise to keep battery fresh! More information, contact David Boulanger.
