California is on

California is on Fire!

Miracle Moment®

“Count the campfires by glowing flames, never by the ashes that fall.

Count your days by the golden hours, don’t remember clouds at all.”

A Message from Executive Director, Cynthia Brian

Mama Mia! Here we go again!

It’s summer and we should be enjoying campfire flames and golden hours, yet it’s only August and California is once again on fire.  Be the Star You Are!® completed Operation Fire and Hurricane Disaster Relief in February, and our teens have once again launched a new outreach, Operation Wildfire Disaster Relief to help those who are suffering, Fire season can last well into November, so we encourage everyone to pack an emergency bag. See below for details.

Aside from the tragedies of the fires, we have a ton of fun, exciting, positive news in this newsletter.

ü  You are invited to a Summer Garden Party on August 23rd

ü  Our 3rd book in the Be the Star You Are!® series, Be the Star You Are!® Millennials to Boomers Celebrating Positive Voices in a Changing Digital World  has been published and is available for purchase with 100% of proceeds benefiting this 501c3.

ü  Join our booth at the Pear and Wine Festival on Saturday, September 22 and become a sponsor of this fun event.

ü  Our literacy partner, The Reading Tub, has a beautiful new website where book reviews by Be the Star You Are! writers are published,.

ü  Tune into our two radio broadcasts where phenomenal guest authors and experts share their messages weekly on StarStyle® and ExpressYourself!

ü   Back-to-school shopping? Shopping on line? #StartWithaSmile at Amazon donates to Be The Star You Are, Inc.

ü  Demonstrate Dignity!

We turned on our MAC in the office the other day to find out that the computer  no longer can access the internet because the browsers can’t be updated. That MAC from 2007 is running Snow Leopard.  Be the Star You Are!® is seeking a new or refurbished MAC desktop or laptop that will take us into the future. If you have the ability to donate, please email YES, it has to be a MAC!

Thanks to everyone who came out to the A’s versus Angels game in June. The game was slow and unexciting but the Jurassic Park fireworks were the best we’d ever witnessed. We all had a great time and thank the A’s for choosing Be the Star You Are!® as the Non Profit of the Night.

May everyone stay safe, enjoy the rest of summer, and get excited for another school year.

Thanks for supporting Be the Star You Are!®

Operation Wildfire Disaster Relief

by BTSYA Teens

If Be the Star You Are!® 501 c3 charity's mission statement could be condensed into three simple words, they would be "positive message media." This goal takes many forms. Promoting literacy is one, and broadcasting weekly with inspiring content through Express Yourself! Teen Radio and StarStyle® Radio is another. The approach that most directly touches lives, however, is our OPERATION DISASTER RELIEF Outreach Program.  Be the Star you Are!® (also known as BTSYA) was one of the first nonprofits on the ground after 9/11. Its objective in 2001 has continued through 2017when devastating hurricanes and fires ravaged America. BTSYA rushed to provide victims of any and all disasters with books and other uplifting resources that would offer solace, hope, healing, and humor.

Books are extremely appreciated by victims of disasters they suffer unimaginable losses. Books, especially the ones we donate that always carry positive messages, allow these individuals to immerse themselves in another world–one where they can escape the horrific events that have just transpired. This is the reason that we volunteers at BTSYA believe that books are a little-known but much-needed, much desired, and much-treasured resource for victims. We must get them shipped to every victim we can as soon as possible.

To that end, Be the Star You Are!® has launched a critical Operation Wildfire Disaster Relief Campaign. 2018 is a devastating wildfire season in California with a death toll that just keeps on rising and the fires continue to grow and burn. The destruction of homes and livelihoods is happening as we speak.

We desperately need you to help us help those in distress by donating funds to procure books and the shipping fees that we will send to victims. Time is of the essence. We implore you to open your hearts and donate today! Make a DONATION through PAYPAL GIVING FUND and PAYPAL with 100% going to BTSYA with NO FEES:

Victims of wildfires have just suffered the most unexpected and devastating losses of their lives; by donating to BTSYA, you have the ability to reach out to them and let them know–even if you never meet them–that you care and will do whatever you can to help. Donate today!

From all of us volunteers at the TOP RATED Non Profit, Be the Star You Are!®, we send our gratitude.

Put Together an Emergency Supply Kit

We encouraged you to put together a “go bag” last fall in the midst of the many disasters and we want to make sure you do it. Whether you are involved in an earthquake, tornado, hurricane, flood, fire, or other calamity it will behoove you to have an emergency supply kit in your vehicle and a larger one in your home. For your home, make sure you know where all of your important documents and other items are that you don’t want to lose. Sometimes, as is the case with these California fires, a matter of minutes was the difference between life and death. Make copies of your passport, driver’s license, credit cards, and have some small bills available. Know where your chargers are for phones, tablets, and computers. Back up your computers and keep files in the cloud or off site. Make a plan for your pets and animals and have a bag ready for them as well. We suggest putting a reminder page attached to the top of your “go bag” to grab your documents, money, purse, scrapbooks, or whatever else you have deemed essentials. Most of all, remember that saving your life and that of your family is the most important.

For your car, fill a backpack or small case with the following:
First Aid kit

Work gloves

Bottled water (1 gallon per person per day)

Walking shoes

Peanut butter

Protein bars

Personal hygiene kit with toothbrush, soap, medications

Flashlight with extra batteries

Eating utensils

Breathing masks (Niosh-N95)

Clothing change

How Do You Demonstrate Dignity?

By Karen Kitchel

Dignity is the right of a person to be valued and respected for their own sake, notes Wikipedia. An article in Psychology Today written by Donna Hicks refers to dignity as "our inherent value and worth as human beings; everyone is born with it."  We may not realize the great impact dignity has on our lives and our relationships. When we feel accepted, we have greater hope for the possibilities in our lives.

How do you demonstrate dignity?  Simply treat people with courtesy and kindness. It can be as simple as asking someone's name or looking them in the eye and saying good morning as you pass them by. The opposite is also true. If you lose a game and you say nasty things about your opponent, you are acting without dignity.

Sometimes people who don't look or act like us might cause us to think less of them, but it only takes a moment of thoughtfulness to prove our own dignity.  After serving breakfast to a woman at a homeless shelter recently, she came up to me and said "You don't just give us food, you give us dignity."   My immediate response was "that's how it should be."

Kindergarteners are often the best examples of demonstrating what dignity looks like. If they see a child fall down in a game or someone comes to school with a dirty shirt, they will wrap their arms around them to show their unbiased caring.

In 1994, Bob Dylan wrote a song called "Dignity" which includes these lyrics:

Got no place to fade, got no coat
I’m on the rollin’ river in a jerkin’ boat

Tryin’ to read a note somebody wrote
About dignity

Bio: Karen Kitchel is passionate about scattering kindness.  Currently she serves meals to the homeless, is a teacher, writer and mentor.  She can be reached at
