The Passing of Friends: The Czech Center Museum Houston is saddened at the recent loss of member friends.
Gladys Froehlich Kahanek (deceased August 15, 2010) was a Founder, Club 200 and Honorary Board Member with husband Leslie (deceased) since CCMH inception, February 1995. Gladys served as the organization’s Prague International Gifts Shop Volunteer Manager until our move to the Museum District in 2004. A wonderful friend, organizer, joyful, productive person we shared many interesting experiences including when we ordered twelve beautiful crystal votives, not realizing we would receive twelve dozen! We still have several of these!! Note the Houston Chronicle’s obituary and her beloved family. Gladys was so cool. She would have been a great General!
Marvin E. Chernosky, M.D. (deceased August 15, 2010) joined CCMH in August 2000 as a Founder, Club 200 member with Jean and family, his first letter thanking the CCMH for its cultural heritage education mission. One of the many large early Czech immigrant families, the Texas Chernosky Dynasty, I was told they were called, Dr. Chernosky’s extensive life experiences (a pioneer in Dermatology Medicine) are chronicled in the Houston Chronicle.
Ron Plasek passed July 29, 2010. Ron was my neighbor for a number of years. We watched his family grow up. Endowed with several Rice University degrees he devoted his career to developing well logging tools. Ron was a recent member of CCMH.
Life goes on and while we don’t forget our dear friends we must continue, i.e. building the August 28, 2010 Sixteenth Annual Fundraising Event. There really are many reasons for your attendance even besides giving your financial support to CCMH and having a delightful evening. This year we have exceptional trips, vacation getaways, Kentucky Derby Mint Julep Collection, a 100 years old exquisite Czechoslovakian porcelain dinner set, an elegant set of six circa early 1800’s black walnut cane bottom dining chairs, baskets of treasures, a grand wine auction, a set of early 1800’s also elegant sofa end table lamps, dinners, sports tickets, golf packages, hunting trips, a Persian rug, grand piano concert/dinner package truly our most wonderful offering ever! Please come to Welcome the Czech Television crew visiting our Texas producing a documentary! Not withstanding the fact, you will have butler passed hors d’oeuvres, a superb seated dinner, delectable wines, dessert as we honor Honorary Czech Consul General of Texas Ray Snokhous and wife Clarice Marik Snokhous for their years of service. Please RSVP at your earliest. The 28th is almost here.
A Music Legend – Jimmie and Lucie Brosch met with us recently along with new member Theresa Cernoch Parker – writer, journalist, to collaborate on a new book. Theresa and Jimmie are writing about the legendary early Texas Brosch family musicians and Jimmie’s own illustrious musical career. Jimmie does the dictating and interviewing of the remaining legendary early Texas bands while Theresa does the writing. Stand by for the Jimmie Brosch Book Signing of History of Early Texas Czech Music at the CCMH, a resource for the new book. For more info access www.polkabeat.com The youthful Jimmie says he suffers health problems but he just hasn’t had time to start thinking about them yet!
Speaking of new Books the CCMH is honored to be included in Penfield Press new Czechs Forever – a Biographical Guide from Albright to Zykmund compiled by Robert S. Wachal including from Saints to Scientists. I am not sure where we fit in but the book begins with Havel and ends with us! We will have copies available for sale in early September.
CCMH Monthly Thursday Mixers 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. are an interesting opportunity to mix with members and others in the community. Last month we enjoyed young Marek Ruzicka of the Czech Republic who spoke about his country, his American education full golf scholarship and his business entrepreneurism (prior to departure home that week). Last evening we enjoyed sharing the magnificent 1269 piece Ottervik Collection of Czechslovak art glass and ceramics made for export between the two World Wars 1918-1938. We hope you will be able to join us at our next mixer.
Stay cool,
Effie M. Rosene
