City Deal a G21 Board focus in Canberra

Meetings in Canberra late May were among the most important G21 has had in recent years, aimed at ensuring the long-term prosperity of our region.

The meetings came at a crucial time. A federal election must be held within the next 12 months and an historic City Deal funding package for Geelong and the Great Ocean Road is at an advanced stage of negotiation.

Board members impressed on both the Government and the Opposition that firm commitments are needed on a number of projects from both sides in the lead-up to the federal election.

GROW    
$750,000 State Government boost to GROW in G21 region

The G21 Region Opportunities for Work (GROW) project has received further endorsement from the State Government with an additional $750,000 in funding.

And what started as an ambitious idea to address place-based disadvantage in the G21 region, has been adopted by the State Government to be rolled out across Victoria.

Supporting Eco Tourism on the Great Ocean Rd

A $1.5 million State Government grant to the Conservation Ecology Centre will create a new nature park, Wildlife Wonders, on a spectacular 50-acre site just outside Apollo Bay.

With over 2.1 million people visiting the 12 Apostles and Shipwreck Coast region each year, the project seeks to capitalise on the tourism market and enhance visitor experience.

Lift for Colac Investment & Jobs

A meat processor in Colac will expand its operations and create new local jobs with a $10 million investment project.

The project will enable Australian Lamb Colac to boost its domestic and global exports markets, and position the company as the largest and most technologically advanced processor of lamb and mutton domestically.

Tourism for ALL in Geelong and the Bellarine

Tourism businesses in Geelong and the Bellarine have received a $1 million boost to learn the skills to make their businesses more accessible.

The ‘Improving the Accessibility of Geelong and the Bellarine’ project will provide practical support to help tourism businesses welcome customers with a disability and recruit employees with a disability.

Funds for Bellarine Ramsar Wetlands

The State Government has launched a new seven-year blueprint to protect and enhance one of Victoria’s acclaimed wetlands, the Port Phillip Bay (Western Shoreline) and Bellarine Peninsula Ramsar site.

Among the world class flora and wildlife are very large numbers of waterbirds, as well as threatened species and ecological communities such as saltmarsh.

Central Geelong abuzz with new residents

Thirty-thousand european honey bees will call Geelong's City Hall rooftop home, using the green oasis of Johnstone Park and nearby streets to find food and nectar to create organic honey.

The honey bees are expected to start producing honey for harvest this spring and it is hoped they will produce between 10–25 kg of honey per year.

AirAsia’s Avalon move on-track

AirAsia is well advanced with plans to move its Victorian operations to Avalon Airport from Tullamarine Airport in late 2018.

The move to Avalon will provide lower fares and a more streamlined and efficient airport experience for AirAsia guests.

New opportunities for local students

High school students across Geelong will soon be able to finish with an apprenticeship or traineeship, ready for work in high-demand and high-growth industries.

The Head Start Apprenticeships and Traineeships initiative will allow students at 13 local schools to do paid, on-the-job training while finishing VCE or VCAL.

Stellar line-up for G21 Forum

G21's 2018 Stakeholder Forum to be held in August has a stellar line-up of speakers designed to cater for a wide range of interests.

ABC TV's Dr Julia Baird will be a key speaker, with presentations from the Premier and Opposition Leader, among many others.

Victorian Agribusiness Summit 2018
Hosted by the G21 Agribusiness Forum, ‘More Food for Thought’, will showcase the developments in Victoria’s regional agribusiness sector. The Summit promises to deliver an exciting line up of speakers from all sectors of the food production and manufacturing sector. The latest technological advances will be on display for any organisation involved in food production.

Refugee Week Screening of 'Human Flow'
Human Flow depicts the magnitude of the global refugee crisis, in which over 65 million people around the world have been forced to flee their homes to escape famine, climate change and war in the greatest human displacement since World War 2. Funds raised will support local asylum seeker and refugee actions.
