State Budget delivers on City Deal

G21 welcomes funds for a City Deal in this week’s State Budget and calls on the Turnbull Government to provide at least matching funding in next week’s Federal Budget.

A City Deal for Geelong and the Great Ocean Road is a giant step closer due to the $153.2 million allocation by the State Government.

Pleasingly, the State has indicated the City Deal funds are earmarked for significant projects which will benefit the region’s visitor economy in the long-term, such as a Geelong convention centre, facility improvements along the Shipwreck Coast and central Geelong revitalisation works.

There were a range of other important funding announcments, and some surprising omissions.

GROW's $20.2m injection creates jobs

The joint Give Where You Live Foundation and G21 GROW initiative has reported a $20.2 million increase of local procurement among 16 participating organisations across the G21 region in the last year.

Economic modelling shows that local procurement generated through the GROW initiative has led to 179 jobs in the G21 region.

Of those, 75 where on-the-ground specific jobs or placements in disadvantaged communities; a major GROW objective.

G21 Chair & Deputy positons

Give Where You Live CEO Bill Mithen was re-elected Chair of the G21 Board at its April meeting.

City of Greater Geelong Mayor Cr Bruce Harwood was elected Deputy Chair.

The board thanked outgoing Deputy Chair Golden Plains Shire Cr Des Phelan for his valued work in that role.
