Bipartisan support for regional planning protections

Stronger planning laws for the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula will be established, with both the State Government and the State Opposition committing to legislate town boundaries and height controls in the two regions.

Late last month the State Government announced a pre-election commitment to set permanent restrictions as part of an effort to protect Geelong’s coastal towns from overdevelopment.

Only days later, the Coalition announced  similar plan, should it win the November election.

Under the shared objective, any attempt to change the town boundaries would need to be passed by Parliament.

This announcement is in line with public comment received by G21 during its extensive consultation when developing the G21 Regional Growth Plan.

The G21 Regional Growth Plan, acknowledges the importance of the region’s unique coastal settlements to the lifestyle, environment and economy of the region. That includes protecting those things that make our region unique, such as the coastal villages and towns.

Renegades Set To Hit Geelong For Six In 2019

It follows the Renegades’ hugely successful first Geelong double-header last season, which saw almost 24,000 people come through the gates – a record for a non-AFL match at the venue.

ELECTION UPDATE: G21 watches State Election promises

Victoria’s 24 November state election is looming so G21 is keeping a close watch on party commitments made against G21's Priority Projects for the region. Below are commitments made against G21 Priority Projects since our last Snapshots newsletter.

Labor commits to GPAC
A re-elected State Labor Government has committed $128 million to deliver the final stage of the Geelong Performing Arts Centre (GPAC) redevelopment.

Labor commits to GMHBA Stadium
A re-elected State Labor Government would commit $102 million to ensure completion of the fifth and final stage of the Kardinia Park GMHBA Stadium redevelopment.

Bipartisan support to protect Surf Coast and Bellarine
Both parties have vowed to permanently protect the Surf Coast and Bellarine Peninsula from over development, with planning protection enshrined in law. While this is not a G21 Priority Project, this is in line with public comment received by G21 during its extensive consultation when developing the G21 Regional Growth Plan.

As for previous elections (both state and federal) a table of commitments against G21’s Priority Projects is being maintained and published on the G21 website.
Fed Labor pledges $153m for Geelong City Deal

Labor Leader Bill Shorten has announced an elected Labor federal government would kick in $153 million towards a Geelong City Deal project.

The money would be put towards the Geelong convention centre, the Shipwreck Coast Master Plan, Central Geelong revitalisation and the Geelong Waterfront Safe Harbour project.
