St. John 2

This year's contest was judged by David St. John. He has been honored, over the course of his career, with many of the most significant prizes for poets, including both the Rome Fellowship and the Award in Literature from the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, the O. B. Hardison Prize (a career award for teaching and poetic achievement) from The Folger Shakespeare Library, and the George Drury Smith Lifetime Achievement Award from Beyond Baroque. He is the author of eleven collections of poetry (including Study for the World’s Body, nominated for The National Book Award in Poetry), most recently the collections, The Auroras and The Window, as well as a volume of essays, interviews and reviews entitled Where the Angels Come Toward Us. He is also the co-editor of American Hybrid: A Norton Anthology of New Poetry. David St. John has written libretti for the opera, THE FACE, and for the choral symphony, THE SHORE. He lives in Venice Beach, California.

First Prize: $1000  
Second Prize: $500  
Third Prize: $250  
Five Honorable Mentions will also be awarded.  
All winners and honorable mentions are invited, at their own expense, to read their poems at the Beyond Baroque Poetry Contest Reading on Saturday, April 25, 2015, at Beyond Baroque Literary Arts Center in Venice, California, at 8:00 PM.

Beyond Baroque is one of the United States' leading independent Literary | Arts Centers and public spaces dedicated to expanding the public's knowledge of poetry, literature and art through cultural events and community interaction. Founded in 1968, Beyond Baroque is based out of the original City Hall building in Venice, California.
Through the years, Beyond Baroque has played muse to the Venice Beats, the burgeoning Punk movement and visiting scholars. Many of the city's leading literary talents, including Dennis Cooper, Wanda Coleman, Tom Waits, Exene Cervenkova and Amy Gerstler, are alumni of the Wednesday night poetry workshop. Many of the world’s most well-known independent artists and poets have performed and read at Beyond Baroque, including Patti Smith, Michael McClure, Dana Gioia, Viggo Mortensen,   Diane Wakoski, Molly Peacock, Juan Felipe Herrera, novelist Edna O'Brien and Pulitzer Prize winner, U.S. Poet Laureate Philip Levine.
