Tips for August

1. Take advantage of local markets and farmers.  There are a lot of vegetables ready for purchase so instead of going to a larger supermarket think local and try to purchase from someone in the area or stores that sell local produce.

2. Haven't been outside as much as you wanted?  Check out close to home opportunities for hiking such as Mines of Spain or Swiss Valley Nature Preserve.

3. Use your bike!  If you are worried about carrying things purchase a small basket to attach it.  They are inexpensive and can hold more than you think!

4. It has not been extremely hot lately.  Keep your windows open.  When you know the weather will get warm shut the windows to keep the cool air in.  You won't have to turn on the AC  so soon.

5. If you live in the city of Dubuque think about composting.  Contact Dubuque public works (563) -589-4250 to see how easy and affordable it is!

Back to School

Don't brown bag it; instead opt for a washable, reusable container to tote your lunch to and fro.  Just make sure to avoid vinyl lunch boxes which have been shown to contain harmful levels of lead. Choose school supplies that are made from recycled or eco-friendly material
Start thinking about carpooling ahead of time before school even begins.  Think about your route and see if you can cut down on your trips to school.
