Tips For December

1.  With colder weather here it is important to make sure there is enough insulation in your attic, around the basement foundation, around furnace ducts and boiler pipes.

2.  One way to insulate drafty windows is by removing trim and using spray foam to seal cracks. You can find it in a spray can at most hardware stores for a few dollars. Another way to insulate drafty windows is to use weather stripping, and caulking.

3.  Make sure all registers are not being blocked by furniture, rugs, drapes or other objects to allow optimal air flow.

4.  Regular filter replacement is important to allow furnaces to work to the best of their abilities.

Christmas is Almost Here!

present 1 2

As we unwrap Christmas presents this time of year it is important to see what your landfill/recycling program accepts for disposal. Most types of wrapping paper contain plastic products and are not recyclable.  In order to keep these non-recyclable plastic products out of the landfill we may look for alternative gift wrapping ideas.  A few alternatives to wrapping paper include: newspaper, brown paper grocery bags, cardboard boxes, paper bags, reusable cloth.  To check out more alternative gift wrapping ideas take a look at this website http://home.howstuffworks.com/green-living/green-gift-wrap-alternatives.htm

Quarterly Meeting 2

Grants to Green & Petal Host Lunch and Learn

On November 19th, Grants to Green and the Petal Project hosted a lunch and learn for Petal businesses and Grants to Green recipients on becoming Petal Certified.  A panel of three already certified businesses along with two businesses who have received a Petal provided insight and examples to the other participants on ways to approach Petal Certification.  The Petal Project would like to thank the Mystique Casino, Carnegie Stout Library, Loras College, Ecumenical Towers and Four Mounds for discussing their progress with the other Petal Project businesses and nonprofits.

Waste in Your Area
There is information on your landfill.  Have you ever questioned how much is collected in your particular area or how much can be redirected elsewhere?  Iowa DNR has a statewide waste characterization study that you can look at for more information.  Click Here for information about waste near you.
