This Week In Religious Education

2015-08-30 00.30.24

A Big Thank You to Joe Joy and Susan Southwick for putting together a great class about worms and building a worm bin with the kids in class last Sunday.

This was our final summer class, and now it is time to look ahead to the Fall classes.  Please Register Now, online.

Finally, did you receive the Soul Matters @ OUUC email last week?  If not, you can view it here.

Sunday and Everyday: Taking it Home

2015-08-30 00.34.55

The class this Sunday focused on Worms.  We read The Diary of a Worm, built a worm-bin, handled some worms, and had a "dirt cup" for snack.

Extend the conversation at home:

  • Are you fond of worms?  Why or why not?
  • What do you think the difference is between a "big" animal (like the Orcas we learned about) and a "humble" creature like the worm?
  • Is the life of a worm just as worthy as the life of a mammal?  Why or why not?
  • How are we dependent on creatures like worms in our interdependent web of life?

Act on it:

Do you compost?  If you do, talk to the kids about it, and if not, consider setting up to compost.  Make it your "4th R":

Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rot!

City of Olympia residents can get city composting pick-up with their yard-waste bins.  Or, if you are like me outside of town, you might need to set up your own.

Volunteer to Be a Junior Greeter

2015-05-10 09.16.06

Children and youth of all ages are invited to join the Greeting team on Sunday mornings, wearing one of our lovely Junior Greeter "Welcome" scarves and handing out orders of service or just saying "Hello!" to folks as they come through the doors.

If you would like to volunteer as a Junior Greeter, just let me know on any Sunday you are at church and we'll get you set up!

Here Comes the 2015-2016 RE Program!

2015-04-12 00.46.58We are going to try saving some paper and postage this year, and so you won't be receiving a paper packet in the mail describing this year's programs and we won't be using paper registration forms.  Instead:

  • Please check out the latest on the website or on my blog

And please register your kids online!

Middle School Conference, September 25-27

2014-09-27 15.46.11Each year, the middle school (6th, 7th, and 8th grades) youth of the Puget Sound area UU Congregations gather for a conference on Vashon Island.  They worship, play, learn, and explore together, and in the process begin to make connections to the larger Unitarian Universalist world beyond their home congregation.  Through the years, and on into High School CONS and beyond, some amazing friendships are built.  I think this is something all our Middle School youth should go do!

Cost is $120 before September 4th and $135 after that.  We have two parent chaperones attending and will be arranging carpools.  Some half-scholarships are available, check with me if that would help your youth attend.

Registration is now open.  For a registration form, email me at, or stop by on Sunday for a printed form.

Yours along the Journey,

Sara Lewis, CRE
