Newsletter Fall 2014

We are so happy to be back on track in communicating with our HERBAN HEALTH community about the many things we have been doing.   HERBAN HEALTH is grateful to be part of the ever growing and developing work that we do together as practitioners, patients, volunteers and organizations in providing holistic health care to our extended East Palo Alto community.

In this issue of the Fall Newsletter, we report on the implementation in our clinics of a  new electronic record system that greatly improved on our medical record keeping. We also announce the compilation of our Holistic Healthcare Resource guide that would be freely available to the community.  To provide better healthcare services to our patients, we will be taking our efforts in an expanded direction, which includes our offering a new series of   “We are Strong and Beautiful” classes.  Last but not least, we will provide some highlights of our volunteers.

The expanded direction that we are taking stems from our intention to provide the best possible holistic healthcare that we can provide to our community. We want to be able to give more extensive services to our patients and at the same time to reach as many people as we can.  To achieve these goals, we will 1. Give more treatment time and services to our existing patients, 2. Limit the treatment that we give to new patients, i.e. offer them mainly ear acupuncture, access to our classes and opportunity to move into the more extensive treatment, and 3. Have more extensive classes that the community can have access to. We have a strong base of volunteers who are working together to develop our new model. We of course continue to seek practitioners of holistic healthcare in all of its forms for working directly with patients or teaching classes or providing any other help possible. We will be posting more information as we continue to develop our program further.

We have compiled the Herban Health Mind-Body-Earth-Connection Resource Guide, thanks to the efforts of Elena Becks.  This resource guide contains information on free and low cost holistic services available to the extended East Palo Alto community, which are divided into the following categories: 1. BodyMind and the Arts (Meditation, Exercise and Education); 2. In the Earth We Grow (Farmers Markets and Gardening Resources); Sustenance and Essential Services (Food, Housing/Shelter); and 3. The Body is Your Temple (healthcare resources, Eastern, Western Medicine, Non Traditional Medicine and the Healing Arts).  The guide will be available on our website in English and in Spanish and as hard copy, which we are distributing to local nonprofit organizations for use with their clients.

As part of our expanded direction, a new series of classes are developed based on the following concept: In order to be HEALTHY, individually and collectively, those of us who participate in developing, implementing and participating in these classes want to:
•            support and celebrate the beauty the lies within us
•            acknowledge and emphasize our individual and collective strength
•            celebrate our connections to community, and each of its parts
•            Gain knowledge from others as well as sharing our own
The first classes will start in November and pending interest level, we would like to continue offering these and other classes on a quarterly basis.  The classes are Free and will be offered at the Ravenswood Family Health Clinic (RFHC), 1798 Bay Road East Palo Alto.  Since space will be limited, please sign up at the acupuncture clinic at RFHC on Saturday from 8:30 a.m.-12 p.m. or call 650 327-7894 to leave your name and telephone number.

11-12:30 am   Introduction to Meditation (in Spanish)

We are grateful to William Chen LAc who helped to develop an Electronic Health Record system specific to the needs of Herban Health clinics.  It took a few months to make the transition from paper to HER but it is running quite smoothly now.  We no longer need to drag along heavy boxes of patient clinical files from one clinic to another, and we are able to enter and retrieve patient history and treatment records much more readily, greatly improving our treatment efficiency and proficiency.  A great THANK YOU to William!

We have many wonderful volunteers and we try to highlight them one at a time, because they are all so very important to what we do. In this issue of our newsletter we would like to highlight MEIKE PETERS, a guild certified Feldenkrais practitioner. Feldenkrais® consists of our work on how we learn through exploration.  The method employs focus and attention on movement and is gentle, non-invasive, nurturing, and considers the whole person. It has helped many of our patients over the last couple of years.  Meike is a graduate of Notre Dame de Namur University and has worked for many years in the business world, but she also finds time to give volunteer hours for our clinic. We appreciate her very much and look forward to some of the classes that she will be teaching.
